He's using the version prior to the "cold war" and the threat of communism ....and he added "its citizens" and I believe it should say for all....

since we want to treat our visitors to a democratic holiday.

Sorry kiddo but "under God" was added by the Knights of Columbus during the Eisenhower administration in 1954.

galrads: Our pledge is accurate using republic not constitution because we actually have a Constitutional Republic which is a state where the officials are elected as representatives of the people, and must govern according to existing "constitutional law that limits the government's power over citizens.".
Sadly, Obama wants more government to have more power over its citizens.
The flag represents unity. Display is optional. If don't like it we simply don't display it. We do have a constitutional right, not democratic right, of FREE SPEACH in these United States of America.
This is how I exercised my 1st amendment rights to free speech.

I pledge allegiance to the flag constitution of the United States of America, and to the democratic republic for which it stands, one nation under God, indivisible, with liberty and justice for all its citizens.
I replaced flag with constitution because the flag is merely a symbol which doesn't provide me with any rights or protections what-so-ever whereas the constitution gives me everything. I've seen countless examples of people being corrected for saying the US is a democracy with, no it's not, it's a democratic republic. That's why I added democratic. I removed "under God" because number 1, I don't think the K of C had the right to change it and 2, because it excludes all other higher powers like Allah etc and further because this country was founded on freedom FROM religion as well as freedom OF religion.
I added "its citizens" because I don't think the rights and protections of the constitution should be granted to criminals who sneak into this country, in some cases to grow marijuana.

As far as the American flag is concerned, I think it's a beautiful flag and I would never do harm to it. Anyone who would desecrate a flag is an idiot IMO.

Ooby....., you have some good ideas on this topic but this idea of democratic republic escapes reality and states two ooposites.

These two forms of government: Democracy and Republic, are not only dissimilar but antithetical, reflecting the sharp contrast between:
(a) The Majority Unlimited, in a Democracy, lacking any legal safeguard of the rights of The Individual and The Minority, and
(b) The Majority Limited, in a Republic under a written Constitution safeguarding the rights of The Individual and The Minority.

Democracy:
The chief characteristic and distinguishing feature of a Democracy is: Rule by Omnipotent Majority. In a Democracy, The Individual, and any group of Individuals composing any Minority, have no protection against the unlimited power of The Majority. It is a case of Majority-over-Man.

Republic:
A Republic, on the other hand, has a very different purpose and an entirely different form, or system, of government. Its purpose is to control The Majority strictly, as well as all others among the people, primarily to protect The Individual’s God-given, unalienable rights and therefore for the protection of the rights of The Minority, of all minorities, and the liberties of people in general.

In the constriruirion of our Republic, "people" means "electorate"

Now data the truth. We have a constitutional Republic, it's impossible to have a Democratic Republic.

Actually, what we have is in fact a Democratic Republic, in that instead of the popular vote deciding elections for instance, the states send representatives to congress to vote for them. In the end, the decision is made by majority rule, a Democracy! Even the Supreme Court demonstrated recently that it too is a Democracy by upholding the healthcare law by a 5 to 4 decision, again, majority rule!
So if you want to get nit picky about it you could call it a Constitutional Democratic Republic.

It sounds like You may be thinking of the Representative Democracy of Great Britain; because unlimited government power is possessed by the House of Lords, under an Act of Parliament of 1949. I believe it has power to abolish anything and everything governmental in Great Britain.

Whereas, Democracy, as a form of government, is utterly repugnant to--is the very antithesis of--the traditional American system: that of a Republic, and its underlying philosophy, as expressed in essence in the Declaration of Independence with primary emphasis upon the people’s forming their government so as to permit them to possess only "just powers" (limited powers) in order to make and keep secure the God-given, unalienable rights of each and "every Individual" and therefore of "all groups of Individuals."

ooby In my opinion the Constitution goes hand in hand with our independence. If you’ve rewritten it your suit you, well that’s for you to want to think whatever makes you feel good. The thing is, now a day’s there in no respect for our Constitution, much less Our flag. I will fight and kill for my country just as I did at Vietnam, and my job was to kill, and not be killed. If you know what a battle zone is like, well my hat is off to you. And if you don’t know…what I can say just join the ranks. We don’t need to be insulted by what you believe. Today is a great day, and should be respect and memorable for those living and those who gave their lives for this Great Nation. JMO obby
