whitepaws: God had me at " HELLO " Besides if i didnt go to mass i would probally be a bit of a Nut case as it keeps me in check of myself. It also re-enforces me to be Humble when i listen to the scriptures and i get a sense of being part of a Family with all the other people near me .

To think i used to go a few years ago to catch a wee chat with some of the local beautys dressed up in their yum yum clothes ...How shallow was that

MADDOG69: Leo X never said that.

Here is more information taken from Catholic Answers , A site set up to dispel arguments that catholic women are pretty ..I have been to many masses and not all catholic women are pretty

Full Question

Non-Catholics have told me that Pope Leo X said, "It has served us well, this myth of Christ." Is this true?

Answer

Although the quote is commonly attributed without source documentation to Pope Leo X, it is believed to have originated in a satirical piece titled "The Pageant of the Popes" by a Protestant controversialist named John Bale (1495–1563). Bale wrote: "For on a time when a Cardinall Bembus did move a question out of the Gospell, the Pope gave him a very contemptuous answer saying: ‘All ages can testifie enough howe profitable that fable of Christe hath ben to us and our companie.’"

snowlynx: Very true.
I don't believe in God but I believe in religion. Does this make me a hypocrite? Maybe, but I think religion is good for society and especially for children. I would have lost something if I hadn't been forced to go to mass every Sunday with my family up to my early twenties. It taught me that there is something 'more' than me and my family, something that we all have to obey and be subject to. I hated having to go every Sunday but it built up character. Today's kids have more freedom but I think they are losing something.

I would have to say the opposite Snowy. I believe in God but I do not believe in Religion. To me God is not a man with a beard in the sky directing people to heaven or hell. God is the beauty of life which I see in a child's smile or a spectacular sunrise. The mystery of nature. The fact that my heart beats without me thinking about it; that is God to me.

I do not believe in any religion as I see it as man (& woman) made philosophy used for power games to pit one group against another and in the majority of cases causing more harm than good.

I do not think religion is a necessity for children. I was educated with nuns & it was not a pleasant experience. How could those women who are so separate from the real world teach me anything about how to live mine. I believe once a child is brought up in a loving family & community it has no need for guilt & shame filled ideology. JMO

When I was a boy I use to enjoy going to Mass, but it was more to do with the church we went to, the services were always what I can only describe as joyful and uplifting. There was always good music, sung by people who could actually sing and play their chosen instrument, and the priest was also brilliant during his sermons. He would enthrall the congragation with his wonderful vibrant and colourful stories. He was fabolous at projecting his voice and enthusiasm.
But then we moved, and ended up going to the bog standard Irish Catholic church, where the priest walked out, droned and mumbled his way through the service, showed absolutely no enthusiasm, as if they were just going through the motions, as if the service were some unwelcome chore. Where you could plainly see that people were just itching to get out of the place, that most where there only to be seen to be there, rather than out of any spiritual devotion to the church or to God.
It is during this time that I started to drift away from organised religion, that I began to see that the Church seemed only to be there to forfill its own needs, to perpetuate its own existance.
Little I have seen since has convinced me that the church is just a lumbering beast, lurching from crisis to crisis, without a notion of what the world outside of its protected status is really like.

As for whether God exists or not, that is one I seriously struggle with, as for the life of me I can not see why any God would allow its representatives on earth to get away with what they do, without intervening, regardless of the religion.

scriobhneoir: Okay as someone who believes god is a fictional character from an ancient story book,I am just curious asto what comfort people here get from their belief in god. This is a genuine question because as a proud non-believer I find the comfort people get from it intriguing.
I am a christian and proud of it,I don't got to church but if I did I would say so.

You raise a very interesting point. I believe there is a 'force' of some sort that controls our destiny. Science can't explain everything about the world and the difference between me and the God crew is I am totally comfortable not knowing the exact reason why some things happen and just calling it a force, with no real concept of exactly what form it takes. They have to explain it away by creating a character with rigid beliefs.

I now only believe in what can be scientifically verified. I did believe in God because of my parents influence. Gradually I slowly lost my faith in God as I realised that the concept of God evolved over many millennia by mans wish for him/her to be there. The only difference between us and the other animals is evolution and brain power.
