It's 3 am, you hear a window break...your kids are sleeping in their bedrooms down the hall...all of a sudden screams pour out, what do you do? ( all you that would say call 911, just bear in mind, your going to have to take some sort of action along with that, after all the intruder is already in your kids room)just makes me wonder how many would be wishing they had a gun....js
Well, in that situation, what would I REALLY do? Probably shoot myself or my kids accidentally with the gun, before I discovered it was just a tree branch.
Face it. Guns in homes shoot and kill residents far far far more often than they do intruders. That's the reality. Guns are NOT safe.
this is the time that you will have to battle your fears and being rattle within the situation....stay calm...and think for the best move you can do instead of driving off your emotion...calling 911 is the immediate option...

911? If I call anyone it will be either the ghost busters or vp joe biden.

agree....but you have to realize seconds matter here between life and death for your children...so what do you do?
The reason for this thread is to get people thinking ahead of what they would do in certain situations, no you can't know exactly how you would react, but their needs to be a plan in place...called being prepared.

there's going to have to some sort of evasive action...

Your own gun-worshipping scenario left me no other options. If it had, I'd have bought a dog. But you, like many others, seem to think permanently having something my kids could accidentally kill themselves playing with is a better idea than a dog.
Say! If I were a gun-toting criminal, I know which house I'd target...the one WITHOUT the dog. Mom'll be asleep when I break in, no dog to wake her up....then after I shoot her in the head, I can steal the gun in her bedstand! After that, taking care of the sleepy kids will be a piece of cake! And ballistics will prove it was HER gun that did it!

Ok, so what's to stop him from putting a bullet in your dog's head...js...if I was a hideous criminal, seriously...you get rid of what could stand in the way of your crime...also, really?? if you shoot her in the head with YOUR gun, do you really think they will think she did it?? obviously there are 2 guns in play here

Exactly. More guns equals more mayhem. Not more safety.
I myself see nothing wrong with having a gun in one's possession as long as the person doing so is very responsible and would have the weapon locked up safely.
If I had children they would be educated in gun safety and respect but not use.
In this situation, as I don't have a gun, I would call 911 and then I would take out the baseball bat under my bed and go to my children's rooms as quietly as I could. No one really knows what to do in situations like this. Even though it's good to be prepared no one knows how she/he will react until they are put in that situation. All I know is if I had children I would do all I could to protect them.

I hope if I ever have to be in an emergency situation, you are in the vacinity!!! I admire logical thinking...you are at the top of the list
If your kids accidentally kill themselves with your gun, you, as a fully grown man, should be blamed.
There's no crime in having dogs and guns, too. But if you have no dog, you'll be more careful on who you tell about your gun. Except all criminals know who has a guns.

Wikipedia: The ad began showing children asleep in bed while a ringing phone can be heard in the background with a voice over explaining that it’s 3 A.M., a phone is a ringing in the White House, and that “something’s happening in the world”. The voiceover then asked voters if they wanted someone on the other end of the line who “already knows the world’s leaders, knows the military” and is “tested and ready to lead in a dangerous world"

You do seem to be the type to put animals in harms way. If I had children, I would have the same home security system I have now, having perimeter alarms with plenty of redundancy for power, communications and recordings. I wouldn't have an unsafe gun in my home and I would not have it if I was not competent to use it. Waiting for the right moment and position would be key if I were to use a gun in this situation.
OkieChic: I like that...that's good! But you already know he's in your kids room from the screaming...what is your next move...
Well your introduction post didn't say he was in the kids bedroom. It said you heard screams. The kids could be screaming from the sound of the window breaking. But I'll put that aside.
It doesn't make sense that he would go to their bedroom unless he was going to take them hostage or to kill them. He has to know that you are going to be running in there. That could be his ploy to get you out of your bedroom. Also, if he went directly to their bedroom chances are this person has been in your house before and knows the layout of the house so more then likely, you know each other. Could it be an ex-husband who lost custody of the children and has come to take them away.
So I would be running to the kids bedroom and at the same time calling 9-1-1. When I got there I would do everything possible to distract him from the children. You didn't say that he had a gun so my immediate goal would not be to kill this person unless he has harmed the children. I also wouldn't have a gun so I would have to pick up something in the kids room to beat the crap out of him.
When you kill an intruder, if it goes to court, the prosecutor is going to ask you, why did you kill him. If you say I just wanted to kill him, even though you had a right to kill an intruder, it doesn't go well for you. The thing to say is....I just wanted to stop him. I'll agree that you're not going to think about that when in the scenario that you gave us. That's why it's important to be educated about the law.
So now I'm in the kids room. The minute I see him I will spray the pepper spray but here's another time you have to think when you're spraying it. There shouldn't be any wind in the room unless the broken window was in the kids room, so the spray won't be carried by wind, but you don't want the spray to go into the kids eyes, so you have to work this guy away from the children.
Stopping an intruder isn't just physical. You need to think through the process. By now you should be hearing sirens outside your house.
BTW, if you were thinking I might have said I would get a kitchen knife, that would be a big mistake on my part. Unless I knew exactly how to hold a knife to kill someone, he would have used it on me.
Now that you see I'm a woman of many words, I'd probably try to talk him to death
Funny how these two scare tactics are so similiar.
Also, it's not a scare tactic...it can happen to anyone, anywhere...it's being realistic...having a mental plan in place...I don't live in Wonderland where there's nothing but blue skies and butterflies....I live in the real world where real things happen
