Well I can tell you what I'd do because it happenned to me once before, years ago. Admittedly I was alone in my apartment at the time and it was before I had a family.

An intruder broke into my place late at night while I was watching TV in the bedroom. The lights were off so he probably thought the occupants of the place were asleep.

I caught him in the hallway. I could tell straight away that it was no one I knew. I spoke to him - asked him what he wanted. He was wearing a hoody and he didn't see me coming so was startled. When he looked at me I could see that he was really scared and very young, maybe 16 or so.

He turned and ran out the way he came in.

When I first heard the noise in the hallway I have to admit my heart started racing but when I saw his face, I could see that he was much more hyped-up and afraid than I was. Perhaps he had spent all day thinking about his big break-in.

I can't help but think that the possession of a firearm by either party would have only made this situation so much worse and would have facilitated the potential for tragedy. I know it could have turned out much worse than it did but in most cases, it won't and I don't want to be responsible for injuring someone or worse.

I would do nothing different today. If someone is desperate enough to break into your place then that's just what they are. Desperate, not deserving of death (assuming you could actually manage it anyway).

Weapons are for the fearful, the closed-minded and the closed-hearted.

OkieChic: It's 3 am, you hear a window break...your kids are sleeping in their bedrooms down the hall...all of a sudden screams pour out, what do you do? ( all you that would say call 911, just bear in mind, your going to have to take some sort of action along with that, after all the intruder is already in your kids room)just makes me wonder how many would be wishing they had a gun....js

Firstly, I'd make noise and turn lights on etc.. the majority of burglars run away once they realise they've been spotted.

Secondly, and deeply comforted by the fact that burglars in the UK are extremely unlikely to be carrying a gun, and if I fancy my chances, introduce them to my faithful cricket bat.

a similar thing happened to me several years ago. however, i was not alone.
we heard someone break in, so i silently ran to my son's room and closed the door while my partner grabbed the baseball bat kept by the bed, and turned on the lights. the burglar looked like your average college student wearing a hoody and a backpack. while my partner turned on the lights, i dialed 911 from my son's room. the burglar ran away, and was long gone by the time the police arrived.

Dagosto: Well, in that situation, what would I REALLY do? Probably shoot myself or my kids accidentally with the gun, before I discovered it was just a tree branch.

Face it. Guns in homes shoot and kill residents far far far more often than they do intruders. That's the reality. Guns are NOT safe.

You probably would ("shoot myself or my kids accidentally"). I would not. Woe to the unlucky sob who tries breaking into my home while I'm there.

Years ago I bought large piece of land and a house in the middle of it, in a state forest. I was there about a year and came home one day to find the place burgled.
I realized I was a sitting duck and took steps to protect myself. A burglar alarm hooked to monitoring. A Rottweiler (wonderful pet), and the PROPER ARMS,,,,.
The reality here is, there are burglaries and home invasions.
I am not moving away from here, I like it here.

I think this thread subject has already been done no? Same chit different pile. I get it. You live in an environment of total paranoia, clutching a gun and shooting at shadows...Always imagining the worst. Thoughts are powerful. What you put out there into the universe will manifest in your life...I simply couldnt live like that. sigh

Really? Say that to victims who had no weapon to defend themselves. BTW, I know someone who is a 3rd degree black belt, he is a weapon, is he fearful, nope. Only the closed minded and closed hearted are in favor of the criminal, not the victim who could not protect them self with a weapon. BTW, anything can be used as a weapon. Now what would you do if that person had a knife and was coming at you? Stand there and take it?

Actually this isn't about having a fire arm, BUT what would you and HOW would you defend yourself. I don't live in fear here, self preservation is about your survival, not the criminals life. You get confronted by a strange who means you harm, if not worse. How would you survive, that is basically what this forum is about. Do I need a gun for protection, no. What I have used as a weapon is anything I can inflict the most pain on someone as well as harm. Ever notice that people who float through life thinking it wont happen to me, and when it does, ask themselves, Why did it happen to me?

Well said V. There is a thread somewhere about what being here has taught us, well I have certainly learnt over the last few weeks that I dont want to visit or live in the US, flip sake if its as bad as the people on here are saying I am amazed anyone is still alive there. How could a person live thinking that the worst is going to happen at any given time, must be awful.

To be honest I took it for granted years ago when my son was little that we would never become homeless but you know what we did twice cause my late husband lost his job and a landlord wasn't keeping up his property..

After that I swore I would never take anything for granted again.

Dont be so feking dramatic C. Its not like that is an everyday occurance. Anyway you seem to want me to say I would shoot the person but since guns, thankfully, are not carried around like handbags here that wouldnt happen.
