No you dont, people stayed in bad marriages all the time because leaving just wasnt an option not because of love.

Agree with Glat. The definition or the feeling hasn't changed, but perhaps how people express it has.

I guess the great gift of capitalism is that everything is now evaluated in terms of money, including love.

when you care about someone more than you do yourself. also known as loss of self (as 2 become 1). That is eternal - the definition will not change sweet and curious OP. Love is eternal. It cannot be tamed, drowned or denied. It changes your life gladlyheart wings

Back then? How far back are you talking? Prior to the 20th century, relationships were based on need. Fathers married off their daughters young because they were not essential to the operation of the farm. They were just extra mouths to feed. Young men married the girls because they were essential to provide children. When the couple was married, the man provided for the woman and her children. Without the man, the woman and children had nothing to eat, so the woman stayed in the marriage. The man wanted lots of children to serve as farm hands. The more strong young men he had to work the farm, the more prosperous he would be, so the man stayed in the marriage. Because the girls were not of much use on the farm they were married off young so that they could produce farm hands for their new husbands. It was all about need. Marriages lasted because the woman and her children needed to eat, and the man needed the boys to work the farm. Sometimes there was love involved... sometimes love developed. However, if you look at the history of arranged marriages, love was not essential to establish a marriage. As we moved into the 20th century, the need continued. Women had no rights and were not employable except as teachers, nurses, or a few other professions, so they stayed married because they couldn't provide for themselves and their children. The divorce rate is directly proportional to the ability of women to make a living for themselves. As they became less dependent on men, they became more willing to leave bad marriages. With the urbanization of America, men no longer needed children to work on the farm or in their business, so they became more willing to leave bad marriages. In very recent times, people have begun getting married "for love." Love, however, is transient. Feelings change as people grow, so marriages don't last as long now as they did when they were based on need.

thumbs up thumbs up thumbs up
Finally someone who gets it. Since many women are able to support themselves and their children, why would a women stay in an unsatisfying or even abusive marriage?

True love is comforting, reassuring, encouraging, and sheer serenity, and it is 100% solid.

Love is easy. Love is wanting some one not needing them. Love is soft as a whisper and strong as steal. Love waits and is kind. Love is knowing it does not matter if you have morning breath or that your hair is messed, he
or she will kiss you any way. There is more but I hate to write long post.
Love is present everywhere, you just have to look for it.
