Seriously though, the same thing happened my hands when I was moving house
It was December, bitterly cold and I was constantly washing my hands. The skin on my hands was all cracked and extremely painful. I went to a chemist and they gave me some kind of concoction in a brown bottle....lethal stuff, stung like hell but worked a treat.
My advice, stick to Neutrogena

Elizabeth Arden 8 hour cream..trust me. I use it for everything! Works on skin and dry lips, cuticles, fuzzy hair..miracle gear! Use 'Barrier Cream' before doing manual labour tasks, is acts as a barrier to contaminates and moisurises as well...I also use a hand cream call neutragena norweigen formula, expensive, but i have hands as soft as a babies bum...

I wear gloves for general work, lifting etc, but for finer stuff its hard to get a good tight fitting pair of gloves that arent cumbersome or generally get annoying after a few mins
