This phenomenon has been seen many times before. I saw two women from the USA on television last year on a documentary about such things.
it is called FOREIGN ACCENT SYNDROME. There is a lot on the net about it...try google :)
Good grief! How mortifying must that be to wake up French?
And how galling this is for me, a person that has been practicing his French accent for years and still can't get the line "of course it looked hopeless, but we kept fighting" to sound right in French. Almost as if it just wasn't meant to be.
