pedalguy59: What would we like to do on a first date? Let's exclude the fancy restaurant. Other than that, what would we prefer? All opinions welcome.

You just go for a drink or a coffee, surely? Unless she's really special then I may even pull out all the stops with an exciting first date at the zoo.
A meal in a restaurant is one of the worst first dates and the absolute worst idea is the cinema - I can sit and watch a film in silence with anybody.

Just for once I agree with you
Like living in a time warp , so last year and shows lack of imagination. Watching someone eat is not my idea of romance.
I like the picnic idea though don't like "sand wiches" [excuse the pun.]
Guess it depends on how long you have been "chatting".If you know the person wouldn't it be nice to compare ideas as to where you would BOTH like to go.

An early evening drink for the first encounter - don't have to suffer through a couple of hours if you find you don't connect. And if you do connect, you can always extend it to dinner at a casual, friendly place. Romantic dinners are for 2nd or 3rd dates.
Anyone who took me to the zoo on a date would not be having another date with me! The cinema is best for when you are already comfortable with each other and have no need to talk...
