jac379: The question for me is how much of this is actually to do with protecting women and children from oppression as claimed and how much of it is to do with deterring certain people from living in, or spending time in France?

Call me cynical.
Its only a personal opinion, but i think it is all about deterring certain people from entering France.

jac379: A very worrying set of inconsistant laws open to all sorts of jiggery pokery, I'd say.

With regards of the veil/burqa etc, there is no uniform consensus between different Muslim scholars from different eras on womens dress code.
In a religious sense it is secondary.
Dress codes in the Qur'an are modest, the woman has to cover her breasts and wear some of her clothing long.
no mention how long or what else of the body should be covered.

Women can keep their burker if Im allowed to wear a full faced helmet when I walk into a bank or a court room. The law says Im must wear a helmet when riding a bike but it does not state that I have to take it off. laugh

A man could be just at the side of her wife or her sister, and not recognize her.

I think it is for the host country to decide at their discretion and the women can choose to stay or go. any time it is an issue for domestic security reasons, it needs to come off.

my safety is more important than someone's dress coderoll eyes

otherwise they should be able to wear whatever they chooseshimmy
