sofarsogood74: Most OAP's in Ireland dont have a private pension. The majority are living on the state pension which is about 220 for a single person and 400 for s couple depending really on how long they were in the work force here. It is not huge amount for an old couple to live in when you factor in the cost of ESB, Gas, Phone Bills, TV Bills, and the usual sundry expenses as well as the meds they now have to pay 2.50 an item on their script for. The landline is connected to a lot of personal alarms too that they wear around their neck in case of a fall.

Also the bereavement grant is something old people had to call on more than most and that has been taken away too!

Yes there are some well off old people out there but the majority are scarping by and this budget was a disgrace!

I get the phone alarm thing they wear round their neck but is a €9.50 a month reduction really going to stop them using it?
And if they get ten items a month then thats a €10 increase so say a €20 a month or less than €5 a week.

They pay 2.50 per item. It was nothing 3 years ago. Most get the max amount so its 25 euro a month. And this is the second reduction in the phone allowance and will be the straw that broke the camels back with most too.

You have to remember they will also have the property tax, water charges, bin charges, ESB, Board Gais, TV licence and fee as well as feeding and clothing themselves on 400 quid a week between 2 of them. And they need heating in the winter as they cant take the cold....it kills them. They end up staying in bed rather than turning on the heat...nobody should have to live like that.

I know its 2.50 an item with a max of 25 euro a month. But the meds were free 3 years ago! So that is a huge dent in their money.Plus the phone allowance was well more than 9.50. That is a huge reduction too.

And younger people can take more hardship than old frail people....they are fitter, stronger and the cold does not effect them as much.....Old people are more vulnerable and should be treated as such.

Well said, its a bloody disgrace how our most vulnerable are treated, they worked all their life to struggle even more in old age. blues

I see them struggle up here and its heart breaking, the worry they go through, they would go without food also, shame on our governments, shame on all of us for letting it happen really moping

I have lived on the bread line were I could not meet the basic needs for my family, it was awful stressful. It's simply a disgrace in this day and age.

He never went near a college...Sure in 2003 there was full employment in Ireland.....Finding a few hundred to send your kid to college would have been in a budget of the 99% of people...He was lying as usual.laugh
