saoirse65: In my ignorance..as usual..I have not read the complete thread. I have not watched the budget crap either.
Let them tax booze and cigarettes as much as they like, that is a personal choice that users make, it is not a necessity. I hate when they keep killing the youth and the elderly. IMO everybody should have the right to education without cutbacks. The elderly are the people who worked their asses off and should be able to enjoy their last years. I knew one elderly woman who loved to read the newspaper everyday and could no longer afford it. I knew one young guy working in a hotel a few years back who was trying to make a few quid to put himself through college...the hotel made him pay 25 quid..(pre euro) for a white shirt to wear behind the bar when a freakin Dunnes shirt should have been okay.
People with disabilities were given a life for a while and now with cutbacks their quality of life is diminishing daily.
It is fine for rich a**hole to say...aw we can all cut back..for some people that is not an option, they are already shopping as cheaply as they can, some do not have access to a decent public transport system and still have to drive to work.
There is no equality and we are letting down the youth of Ireland who deserve a future and the elderly who have spent their lives contributing to this country economically and culturally.

thumbs up

Marsman is right. It doesn't matter who or what is in the government. Our sovereignty is diluted to such an extent that most of their cues will come from abroad.

So who to vote for next, FF ruined the place, FG and Labour have outdone FF with their spectacular lies, Sinn Féin just seem protest about everything and anything if they think it will make them more popular and the independents turned out to be a duplicitous as the rest.

I swear, politics just seems to bring out the worst in people, not the best. sigh

mjpd67: listening to the joe duffy show earlier a good few people mentioned how the budget and our goverment shafted our young people and put their fingers up to them ,its bad how they victimised the very old and the young in our society

Ive a query.....they reduced the income level that the over 70's could have to still be entitled to a medical card to €900 for couples and €500 for a single person. Call me stupid but is that €900 a week?
Isn't that those over 70 who have an income of over €46,000 a year???
Or a single person over 70 with an income of over €26,000 a year???

Also the reduction in the telephone allowance is the equivalent of a little over €2 a week. Yes a reduction but in the grand scale of things not the biggest one.

Well remember the telephone allowance was dropped last year aswell. So it's a big drop over the 2 years.
And yes, 26,000 a year. Which isn't a huge amount for an old person really. If a widow still collects ~50% of her husbands private pension + the OAP of ~240 a week or whatever it is now, they'll come very close to that. Most people 70+ are on a bunch of tablets a day, have/need regular checks with the doctors for Cholesterol, blood pressure heart issues etc.

very good point yes its a week to the best of my knowledge admittedly their are some very well to do pensioners but on the other hand their are some pensioners living in abject poverty ,free doctors for those under 5 also does this apply to people with vast disposable incomes ?

i can understand medical cards given under certain circumstances depending on illness etc. Things like this need a basic criteria and those outside of it can be based on a case by case basis.

their are plenty of over 70s living in poverty but do they have incomes of over €500 or €900 a week? I think not.

I dont agree with free doctors for every child under 5 either. As with child benefit, these things should be means tested.

taken from the citizens information website:
Medical cards and GP Visit Cards
The income limits for medical cards for people aged over 70 will reduce from €600/€1,200 per week (single person/couple) to €500/ €900 per week. The GP Visit Card will still be available to people aged over 70 with income up to €700/€1,400 per week. It is planned to have the necessary legislation in place by the end of 2013 or early 2014.

so GP visit cards are still available for to those over 70 with an income level up to €36,400 for single people and €72,800 for couples.
Coupled with the maximum level of €144 a month for an individual or a couple/family under the drug payment scheme. I dont think its as bad as everyone is going on about.

i think the child thing..its an equality thing, its saying no child is more important than another..

but on the grand scale of things..

I believe giving someone who through their own hard work or family connections..whichever, can now afford to be without childrens allowance and free gp care for their under fives this, thus taking away from the back breakers who didnt get to college kids, making that break for the first time ever in their combined families history lives harder when it comes to getting them to college is an inbalance i personally would argue if i was a public representative,

then again most of our public representatives come from the elite anyway and this is like asking for socialism amongst hyenas.

state of humanity..sadly.

Most OAP's in Ireland dont have a private pension. The majority are living on the state pension which is about 220 for a single person and 400 for s couple depending really on how long they were in the work force here. It is not huge amount for an old couple to live in when you factor in the cost of ESB, Gas, Phone Bills, TV Bills, and the usual sundry expenses as well as the meds they now have to pay 2.50 an item on their script for. The landline is connected to a lot of personal alarms too that they wear around their neck in case of a fall.

Also the bereavement grant is something old people had to call on more than most and that has been taken away too!

Yes there are some well off old people out there but the majority are scarping by and this budget was a disgrace!
