I post this because I'm sure there are many misconceptions as to what a soul mate is and so many looking for theirs. eg: someone who knows you but can a dog know you purely an instinctive creature? No!

I don't think you can pin down any one definition of a soul mate, they are many different things to many different people, we all have our own particular likes and dislikes what floats our individual boats an what doesn't, if you find yours then consider yourself fortunate indeed.

Wise words given to me by a friend after someone declared that together we were soul mates, but dumped me a while ago. So if couples have real depth of feeling that yes they would die for the one they loved then they have truly found their soulmate.

I agree with you that there are many misconceptions as to what a soul mate is...
They indeed belong to your "soul family" and may have been a family member, a friend, a lover etc. in a previous life.
We have several soul mates in the course of a life time - I am quite sure that I have met them all by now! - who come to "teach" us lessons, to "mirror" to us things that we still have to heal within ourselves.
Sometimes they are here only for a short time (a day/week/month), and sometimes longer (years, or even a whole life time).
We have previous "soul contracts/agreements" with them to play a certain role in our life. These are necesarry for both our personal and spiritual growth.
I know that there is a lot of information on the internet about soul mates (and twin souls), but the above information that I am giving here was given to me through "chanelling sessions" and also doing hundreds of past life regressions with clients.
Most people can have "access" to this information if they so wish.
