jono7: save your coffee grinds..dry em out and put in a jar in the shower. they make a great body scrub and contain anti-oxidants and tighten skin.
lotsa folks know this easy one..but in case ya don't.. put a dry beach towel into the dryer with wet clothes...cuts drying time in half and saves on your hydro.
Hi Jono
I do not have a clothes'dryer but I will try the coffee grinds -there will be a mess in the bathroom though but worth it.
we accumulate too much stuff/clutter/clothes because of the cost. Even though we may know it isn't very practical to hang on, sub-consciously we 'remember' the expense the item was at the time, and don't want to "throw money away". It sounds addling, but this idea of why we over-collect has been around for awhile. I've known people who collect hundreds of jars, disposable margarine containers, and the like, and even though they may have a garage full, can't seem to spare even one. It's crazy. What is even more disturbing is that these people are well-educated, etc...I saw a documentary where friends were trying to help a neighbor de-clutter absolutely useless items, old magazines, milk cartons, newspapers, and the woman was just bawling, couldn't cope with the idea of it. I don't get this level of sickness.

My guy's sister is what you'd call a pat rat/hoarder and doesn't throw most things away.
She fixes nothing but microwave foods and saves the plastic dishes that the food comes in even though it does say not to reuse them but she uses them anyhow.
While she was in the hospital several months between being in two hospitals and nursing home recovering from a stroke I spent that time cleaning up the house. When I opened up the kitchen cupboards they were so packed with these plastic food dishes.Well I took them all out and rearranged the cupboards.
Months later when she was home and able to get around she cluttered up the cupboards with the very same plastic containers.I noticed she had done so when I reached in the cupboards to get a glass to drink out of.
Your discription of the woman in the documentary resembles a show I saw one time titled' Hoarding Buried Alive'.

Springer Spaniels are great to have around the house, great for blocking door drafts and great as a replacement for a hot water bottle at night lying at the feet, all you gotta do is feed them.

Pets improve quality of life, and are rarely a poor investment. It is said that if we have a pet, especially a social type animal such as a dog, or cat, or many birds, that we are less inclined to be depressed, seem to have a better hold on all home economics, and actually, are healthier and live longer.

cats work the same way, and if you harness one to a mop stick, they make a great but noisy dust mop.
