Hi Guys I am about to give up smoking and I have been doing a bit of research. It seems the most sucessfull way to quit is Cold Turkey. Just wondering do you think a kind of support group loosly based on AA or similar adiction groups would be a good idea. I have quit smoking before and fell off the wagon again once after 18 months. Just looking for feedback and ideas and would be interested in joining me in my battle.

I've just successfully weaned myself off slowly.

There's still been an aftermath as my body reacts to the changes - just things like hydration and the impact that has on all sorts of bits of the body's functioning. I feel rather hormonal and low in spirits at the moment and I know that's as a direct result of giving up even though I haven't had a cigarette for three/four weeks.

I think you have to find the way which is best for you and if cold turkey is the best for you, do it. Just be mindful of the reactions you're getting and will be getting for a while whichever way you do it, even after the nicotine is out of your system.

It's perhaps lacking in self-awareness of the physical and emotional impact of shaking off an addiction which leads us to fall off the wagon - we feel crap and go back to the thing which makes us feel better.

Hi thanks for your reply (Congrats on Quiting by the way). What do you think of the meeting of smokers for support. You see this might seem strange but I can give up its when complacency sets in I find myself in trouble and to talk to like minded people in whatever form would be very helpfull in my opinion.

I don't smoke, but I did. I smoked from seventeen years old to forty-seven years old. Two packs per day till I was 41, then cut back to one pack per day, due to developing COPD: Stage one emphysema. Continued to smoke for six years in a mild state of suffocation. Then developed heart disease: Coronary artery spasms and Atherosclerosis. One stent placed in the LAD artery and three weeks later: Double bypass. You've heard that quitting smoking is hard, but not quitting is harder: I'm proof. My body is permanently damaged from cigarette smoking. Yes, quitting cold turkey is best. I don't suggest a support group, just stop... I view cigarette smoking like this: A lion and a lion tamer, for years the lion tamer has control of the situation, then one day, all-of-a-sudden, out-of-the-blue, the lion takes on a mind of its own and kills the tamer. Just stop. Yul Brynner in mid-stage lung cancer.

It's like any addiction, you are never cured, just in remission. You have to take it one day at a time, for the rest of your life, can you handle that??

Why is it okay for you decide the model of addiction for someone else to use?

If that addiction model worked for you, fantastic, but it might not be the right model for someone else.

Oh dear did I usurp your position of the expert in everything.

It is a universal truth and the correct approach to addiction IMO

Hi Tom I had friends in addiction centers and go to meeting regularly. From what I have picked up (And its only my opinion) its the general support and to openly discuss weakness against the addiction
