Conrad73: Billie Holiday - Summertime

One of the lesser known Billie Holiday recordings but possibly her best. Notice how unhurried the introduction is by Teddy Wilson on piano, how he sets the mood for the song. This is truly an inspired blending of talent.

Thank you for that, I found myself singing along blushing
I'm sure it's not him but it reminds me of Lonnie Donegan. Speaking of Lonnie Donegan, here's the ORIGINAL and best release of Rock Island Line.

This is one of those rare recording that come along once in a while out of left field that zoom right to the top of the charts in every corner of the globe, and everybody and his brother can't wait to make a cover of it but NONE of them have the raw appeal of the original. No matter how they clean it up, add orchestration or big names to it, they all fall by the wayside.

I like any songs by Vera Lynn. What a lovely voice she has. So few young people even remember her and how she brought our world through it's darkest days.

Vera Lynn had the perfect voice for the songs she sang.
When I was a teenager, one of the girls in the crowd, Ann Bretten lost her mother to some illness and the last thing she said before she died was Auf Wiederseh'n (til I see you again). Ann couldn't hear those words without breaking out in tears. I grew up in a German neighborhood in NY so people said Auf Wiederseh'n all the time.

buddies

I am a sailor, you're my first mate
We signed on together, we coupled our fate
Hauled up our anchor, determined not to fail
For the hearts treasure, together we set sail
With no maps to guide us we steered our own course
Rode out the storms when the winds were gale force
Sat out the doldrums in patience and hope
Working together we learned how to cope
Chorus:
Life is an ocean and love is a boat
In troubled water that keeps us afloat
When we started the voyage, there was just me and you
Now gathered round us, we have our own crew
Together we're in this relationship
We built it with care to last the whole trip
Our true destination's not marked on any charts
We're navigating to the shores of the heart
Chorus 2x
