The forgot to fly the fleg for Willy

Council doesn't fly Union flag over Belfast City Hall for Prince William's birthday... and Ruth Patterson is not happy

'
The flag is only flown from Belfast City Hall on 18 designated days per year since the council controversially decided in December 2012 to restrict the number of days.

One of these days is June 21, to mark Prince William's birthday.

But DUP councillor Ms Patterson complained at this week's council meeting that she had turned up for a loyalist flag protest that day to find the flag was not flying.'

ireland <--I'll fly a flag..

I have experienced looking for somewhere to get a bite to eat in Belfast, and in that quest, inadvertently driving down the Shankhill Road, with the GAA flags flying from the car. To say, I did not feel welcome would be an understatement. grin

I should imagine that turning up at an Orange parade with the Kildare jersey on, would magnify that feeling of unadulterated hatred several times.

You have to experience it to discuss it, people will have positive and negative experiences no doubt, but personal experiences all the same.

Would you wear your lilly whites with that jersey Stanley grin

Just for you of course.wink

I am not sure if I agree on having to experience an Orange parade in order to discuss it. From my experience with loyalists, media coverage of the parades and what I have read, surely I can form an opinion?

If I take your argument as a universal concept, I cannot discuss anything I don't have first hand knowledge of, for example, I haven't personally experienced the Roman invasion of Britain, or the Holocaust, therefore, according to your statement, I cannot discuss these topics.

laugh

As someone who lives in Derry, what is your opinion on Orange marches and the marching season in general?

stanley8m: Ah, they do love their flags, bless their little Orange cotton socks.

It was only recently they were going crazy because the Ivory Coast green, white and orange tricolour was displayed in a bookmakers window, and who can forget Wee Willie Frazer losing the plot over an Italian flag that he thought was the Irish colours.

Where is the new future? Same old, same old..

There is be lots of Tricolours sold over the next few days so the orangies can burn them on their bonfires.

Here in the 26 if you even start a fire in the back yard you could get fined, amazed they get away with starting bonfires made up of pallets and tyres.

Ha! I am in the heartland of it all, Portadown, not on the Garvaghy Road, thank God but just to weeks ago they were trying with their antics again to get down the Garvaghy Road but thankfully it didn't work. I was glad, in fact, I was delighted and glad. Why should they parade through Catholic areas, areas were they are clearly not wanted.

They stuck up a union jack flag outside the Catholic church somewhere in County Antrim. I'm just so glad I don't have a lamp post outside my house for if there was one of those "flegs" on a pole outside mt house I'd go out with my ladders and pull the damn thing down, and throw it unto the road!!!!

I say let them have their marches and let them march down whatever road they want whether it be republican or unionist..the fact the nationalist community become so offended and riled up at the thoughts of them marching down their wee road only enforces their entrenchment even more..so let them have their pathetic marches..treat them as if they dont matter then they would soon realize their behaviour is is ridiculous..thats they way their little marching tradition would die out..the youth would see it for what it is..the height of stupidityireland

go to the 1 in Newry at the weekend..it'll be a small affair..most people won't pay a blind bit of notice to them...sure if you watched them and got the phone out to record them they would only be too happy to entertain youireland

stanley8m: Yeah really, drive to Newry to watch a shower of sectarian bigots. I think I will pass on that one.

Strangely enough the one in Donegal every year goes off without a hitch, with 7000 people at the one a few weeks ago. Because it's south of the border they know they have to behave themselves and not act provocatively, pity they don't behave like that at every march.
