Atheists - most distrusted minority in the US (64)
Nidifugous: This week, I heard twice that Atheists are the most distrusted group in the U.S. right along with rapists. Second most distrusted group are Muslims. This was from a gallup poll.
Why is that so. Any ideas? Do people think that one can only be moral if one believes in God?

Depends on the nature of questioning and who's asking... God polls by conservative christian groups can be deceiving..

Communism was overthrown in Poland after an era where both Solidarity and Catholicism were considered subversive. It was the unity they both provided which was feared.
I remember my mother saying that they held mass in secret during WWII in Germany. I'm not sure if that was a Catholic thing, a Jewish thing or on some level a mixture of the two. I don't think that was trivial.
Like I said, maybe different people have a different frame of reference for catastrophe.

Yes, you're right. To many people the right to worship isn't trivial. When I wrote that, I was thinking about faith in terms of thought, not in terms of practice, but it is true that a key component of faith is the expression of thought by means of ritual.
Then again, circumstances often limit peoples' ability to worship on a less extreme level as the one you mentioned. Example: military service, store hours, work requirements, illness, geographic location, cultural environment). A right is only a right so long as one is free and able to exercise it.
Communism only outlawed religion under Stalin. The orthodox church never ceased to exist and the churches weren't destroyed or the priests forced to quit being priests, so far I know.
Poland is an interesting story esp. because the Vatican was involved behind the scene in the solidarity movement. Clearly the Pope had a personal interest there. Whether religion was a primary concern, I can't say, if for no other reason that I don't think we know the whole story there.

Gallup did two polls. They're not religiously affiliated, so far as I know. You are right that the structure of the questions may influence the responses, hence the error margin which, I believe is a standard +/- 5%.
