The Buddha was an Ascetic at one time and it did nothing for him.

I quote something my father said.
After his trip to SriLanka.
"They have been meditating for 800 years and got them nowhere.
No answers, no universal truths, no better life, nothing..."
(((and please don't hold me on that 800yrs timing.)))
They don't eat meat but the ponds are without fish.(nighttime fishing)
So in my atheist mind a monk is something to decrease the urge of war. (less humans produced), to decrease tensions about wealth (easier divided heritage), and to absorb wartime widows (monestaries).
For the rest they helped the spreading of cities in Europe(I'm grateful for that)
But all aspects, it is an unnatural lifestyle and it is waiting for conflicts to surface(p*dophile can happen as example)

I have gone without food for a while, It did not raise my conscious
level. A natural high is Thai Stick.
