Yes, dearies, I agree with most posts here about the word "dear", esp. when appearing in a cold request for personal email and other info. But like most things in life, perspective is important. Some of my female CS and other friends routinely use the word with me, and I believe it's mostly a function of their use of English, and meant to endear. And culturally, these educated ladies are from disparate places, such as Norway, Turkey and Chile, to name a few. Treat the Nigerian/CIS scammers like the scum they are, but don't throw the baby out with the bath water. All you dears. Rob.

so true, that' s why I told the OP that it was hard to tell for certain based on the info she gave us. more contextual clues could be helpful
azucena2013: Someone contacted me but he uses alot the word "dear", could be a scammer? The rest of his emails seems OK except that word.
On here, dunno, very few have ever called me "dear", but that could be for any number of other reasons.
I've never taken offence to the word though, and I do know a couple of people that use it regularly with a lot of people in daily life. Mind you, they're 60 ish plus, but still.
Scammers are easy to spot, usually, but it's not usually a word or phrase that gives them away, it's their general use of language and especially if it's English. Not to mention their inability to answer direct questions.
Haven't had any trouble with scammers for many years on here, just simply delete them. I have had trouble with fake profiles though, and some of them are the last type of person you'd ever expect to be behind one. There are some truly messed up people here on CS.
Over here, a lot of strangers call me "Sister" and I swear they look nothing like me
Now on a serious note, from my experience, the overuse of the term "Dear" in the first messages is a big red flag for me. And when the profile states the sender is a native English speaker, I'm not wasting my time.

Hey Kiddo, long time no see. Glad to see you around. I hope all is well with you.

that is also how I look at it. (after having received hundreds of messages on various sites) -based on experience.
