In my case, I use a variety of tillage and rotational methods depending on the crop. There are methods of weed control that are quite effective, such as planting row crops into well established hay crops such as alfalfa, or clover post harvest of the hay crop. Fertilizer is really pretty easy as it uses livestock manures that have been composted, crop rotation and use of natural products such as lime and rock phosphate.
These are all methods that emerged around 900AD and were refined in the middle ages.

We do use cattle manure to improve the soil fertility and lime usually on the or cards to prevent the pest.

I do use DAP and SSP for phosphorus purpose, sometimes, biological trapes are good to prevent the flying insects.

Da_Moose: I too live in northern climes with a long extended winter where temperatures often go lower than -40...yet there are many fruits we grow here....hardy apples, crabapples, cherries, saskatoons, currants, raspberries, strawberries, currants, gooseberries, cranberries, and so on...melons, peaches, citrus...not a chance! Pineapples?

Southern part of Sweden has 2 months longer growing season, they grow apples, cherries etc in south. Some berries can be grown here too. But we do have wild berries!

I worked as a farm trainee on the prairie in Alberta in my younger days. wink I work in the agr. field as a professional.

There are no pure agricultural states, however there are a number in the midwest that derive maybe 50% of their income from farming.

You can only grow tomato and cucumber in green houses here, no fruits!

The heating COSTs for running a green house are so high, so there are not many green houses left. It's cheaper to buy Dutch or Spanish tomatoes! That's reality!

Move to a new country and buy a little greenhouse, or take your own with you and don´t take the sun for granted, we only had almost 11 hours of it today
