Merle Haggard, the grizzled country music legend whose songs, such as "Okie from Muskogee" and "Fightin' Side of Me," made him a voice for the workingman and the outsider, has died. He was 79.
Haggard died Wednesday, his birthday, of complications from pneumonia at his home in Northern California, his agent Lance Roberts told CNN.
A very sad day, Merle has been my favorite singer/songwriter since I heard his first song (for me that was Okie from Muskogee) back in the late 60's. Being a hippie at the time it didn't exactly tickle my fancy but I recognized his talent and continued to enjoy his music as I discovered more about him. He had such a way with a phrase and was one of the best guitar/fiddle players in country music. Between him and Willie and Kris (luckily we still have two of them) some of the best songs ever written were recorded for history. I fear the near future will see more of the greats leaving us. This recent time we've lost George Jones, Johnny Cash and Glen Frey and a few others. R I P Merle
He lived in my hometown of Palo Cedro, California. I am just in shock when I was told - as is Shasta County we are all in mourning.
I used to drive past his home which was on a hill and would see his tour buses. I did this for years taking my daughter to her babysitter's just a few miles past his home. Wow that was 37 years ago.
I met one of his daughter's Dana who worked with my daughter she is a sweetheart. Never did meet him. But he will be missed in our area.
