Stable, family-oriented and socially conservative the USSR could not compete with the vibrancy and diversity of capitalist individualism, innovation and variety of parsley sauce.

And the future is a bit of a mix, what do they call it capitalism with Asian values? - this reflecting the fact that capitalism today functions only where democracy doesn't. The future is dictatorship with 13 varieties of parsley sauce.

If you were in the right place at the right time you had everything to gain from privatising society and no living memory of what happened after the last plunderthon. The Soviets started to unravel in the 1970s same as Social Democracy there's a generational shift at work that's more about expectations and life experiences than it is to do with concepts of ideology.

HexagonKeySet: No, Mr Gorbachev was extremely naive in believing that the USA actually intended no harm and acted in good faith ... the USA did not, rather it followed it's common policy of infiltrate and double cross.

Reagan was a convincing actor ... Gorby got took !!!

So, looking back ...

Russia decommissioned nukes ... the USA began parking nukes closer to Russia's borders

Russia allowed the US 'to help in creating policy' ... under that cover the USA flooded Russian with NGO's promoting left wing US Values and attacking traditional Russian values, morality and ethics

Russia allowed the USA access to it's oil and mineral wealth ... the USA cheated on the deals

It's a long long list ...

Kruschev and 'The Old School' realised they were being bent over and thoroughly screwed but ... well, they were old fellas and they knew that didn't have the nous nor the energy ... so they appointed Putin who very clearly has shown that he has both.

The US hate Putin because from his very first day on the job he's always acted in the very best interests of the Russian people.

While the USA has declined into un-repayable levels, Russia has advanced especially on reducing debt, modernising infrastructure and improving the standard of living for the Russian people!

I must have missed that when I was working there, and how about the dead who tried to stop the bully tactics in Ukraine, not sure they think so highly of Putin, or many of those living in The Crimea.
