I'm not putting myself up as saintly, but I enter a topic not my own creating in a spirit of discussion, since that's what the OP had planned, notwithstanding the inane guff that some people put up and of course the abrasive subjects calculated to cause descent among those just spoiling for a bit of brinkmanship, which I avoid through either lack of interest or lack of an informed opinion...But that's not what happens, and as you clearly said, the mud slinging and name calling starts.

I go on the IF occasionally, and lately i have seen a bit of movement on there,
so you never know how that might work out.
Too much aggro on the Inter, forums,, insults being the order of the day, most days.
Don't get me wrong, there are some very nice people on there, its just the few
that seem to have a self distruct button that they press daily.

Consider any discussion or debate in the real world, and whether it would pass muster if people just started spouting things completely off subject, there is a call to order... I'm not suggesting an internet police state for being staid and predictable, I am suggesting courtesy in a public forum, the likes of which you would hope to find in your daily dealings with others...
So far as getting out the kitchen is concerned, I'll stick around for the while, cover myself in goose fat and baste till golden brown....

It's not like a symposium of few thousand specialists in the same line of science who can discuss their subjects ad infinitum every time from a different angle. Our private, rather uninformed and seldom original opinion is all we can offer. Would you prefer people repeat the very same thing time and again or live the thread or continue to interact with each other ignoring the topic?

In Ireland we have Boards.IE, it's a discussion group, open to all to view, but you would subscribe to comment, there is also Bock the Robber, another group fronted by one very well read and strict founder / moderator...
This is an international group, with thousands of members looking in, and I'm sure, we'd get more participation if the subjects of substance were allowed to be just that... There's more room than enough for light hearted banter, word games, say what your thinking, what are you eating now etc etc...
I know there's a small pool of respondents, what, about 30 or so regulars, but it wasn't ever thus... I came here in 2011 and have been and gone a couple of times, the conversations I've had have been many and varied, and have been irreverent to full out war, and it was brilliant....
Maybe it was a thing of its time, but really, with all the options available, isn't a difference of approach something to grateful for, or am I that out of touch with things....

Quite possible. Many switched from stationary machines with a proper keyboard to smaller devices and there's only so many words you can type with one finger, as I'm doing now. Requires a lot of patience. I have an experience of a forum that died when significant number of participants acquired smartphones.Maybe it was a thing of its time, but really, with all the options available, isn't a difference of approach something to grateful for, or am I that out of touch with things....

I also used to keep to EU forum, but some time ago there appeared a rat, who snitches people to mods. Spoilt the place for me. Before we never reported anything.
Then for a forum to live you need quite a few intelligent and engaged participants. There are some, but perhaps not enough to satisfy your idea of glory :)
