This was prompted from the thread, what's on your mind.
And specifically #164.

The help that can be given to others, from what you know, and are good at.

My problem at the moment is a small leak in an out going pipe from an en-suite toilet.
I have had a plumber in to look at it,, he first quoted me a price of €3,0000,
which i just knew was too much.
A few have said to me, that it was a quick job, it would need some silicone?

Any advice anyone?

don't know a lot about plumbing Anna, but that certainly sounds like a rip off! Have you a local paper where handymen advertise?

Anna, the price you have been quoted is a way too much... 3000 would get you a newly fitted en-suite... If it's a leak and no more I'd look at between 100 to 200 if the parts needed are consumables...
I have a very good plumber who did complete rework of my outside stand pipe, 120 euros.... Do you have any friends with contacts?... Recommendations beat lucky dip every day of the week...

He was sent out by the insurance company.
He said first of all that the ceiling would have to be pulled down.
It is just a small job, so i told him i wouldn't be having that done.

Looking for someone else now to do it,,, talk about taking advantage !!doh sigh

There are SOME tradesmen who will try and take advantage of a woman on her own, had my gas boiler serviced last year and he quoted me 300 for a new part, told him I`d get a second opinion and was glad I did, it was just airlocked, didnt need a new part at all..be careful

Once insurance companies are roped in its a green light for some tradesmen to chance their arm on a drawn out labour charge... If your house insurance premium will be effected, then it might be advisable, if it's a small job, to pay cash....this goes for car insurance work as well...honesty, go with recommendations from trusted friends/work colleagues...

I once changed a ball valve in the toilet of a pub I frequented.

Didn't have to buy a pint for the rest of that day.
