bodleing2: You might be right. The quote comes from Geoffrey, Jo's gay friend and soul mate. The part was played by Murray Melvin who was born in central London. I think he was playing the part of a Northener in the film but I can't be sure, it's a long time since I've seen it.

I don't think so. It was one of a gendre of classic black and white British films, Saturday Night and Sunday Morning starring Albert Finney being another. Usually a portrayal of life as it was, warts and all.Anyway, I've found a short clip from a Taste of Honey with Geoffrey and Jo containg the quote you posted. Geoffrey is definitely talking with a Northern accent.
