secretagent09: If I ask the waitress to describe a certain dish that's on the menu and she does I might say that sounds good I'll take it. When the dish comes and I don't like it because it doesn't taste what I fantasized about it's not the chef's fault that I don't like the dish. Therefore I don't have to eat it but I do have to pay for it.

On the other hand I was in a steak restaurant and when I got my steak I could tell before I tasted it that it was spoiled meat however I took a bite. I told the waitress that it was spoiled meat and she said that's impossible. I told her to smell it but she wouldn't. I didn't pay for it and left.

In a good restaurant the waitress would have assumed I was right and would have offered to get me something else. She didn't and I never went back there.
My understanding, (at least in Oregon..) is that if you “taste” any restaurant dish and don’t like it, (notwithstanding leaving just one tiny bite and then saying it wasn’t good..) in other words, leaving ALMOST ALL of the food, you are NOT required to pay for it. This is commonly called, “you ate the steak; you didn’t eat the steak”. Whether or not you “thought” it would be good is inmaterial. Comparatively, say you buy a pair of shoes. You walk around the shop, they feel great. Next day, they don’t. You tried them, they don’t work. You get to take them back for a refund.

rohaan: Absolutely! The order may be perfect, and most people would find it scrumptious. For some reason, your taste buds don’t receive it well. Gotta chalk this one up...not the establishment’s problem..
Re-thinking this. I back-pedal...pretty sure you don’t have to pay for it if you don’t eat it ( except for a taste, as said before..)

I think you misunderstood what I said. Or maybe you didn't. Regardless, I took ONE bite of the steak. It not only tasted bad as in spoiled but also smelled rotten.

So,
One bite
Rotten smell
Spoiled taste

I didn't pay for it. Are you really going to challenge me that I should have paid for it?

Stan_147: It would depend on which restaurant I’m currently visiting.

The burger shack, not so much.
Gordon Ramsay’s establishment, game on.
Doesn't matter to me which restaurant or how many times I visit the establishment. I'm afraid someone in the kitchen spit in my food.laugh

In my younger days I worked as a waitress and I witnessed some nasty things go on behind the closed doors.barf

galrads: Depends on how much time I have before I have to leave after I am served my meal. I never ask to send my food back unless the server realizes they got it wrong. If the order is wrong or just tastes bad I will ask for the manager, state my case then place currency payment (w/o tip) next to the food and say something like, ‘you eat it’ and then leave.

A waiter/waitress should never be rude or question your opinion. I wouldn't go back either and I'd leave a bad review on their website.

serene56: Hi Frisky

There's a difference between an order being incorrect and not being to your satisfaction.

If it's incorrect, just send it back.

If it's not to your satisfaction, it's a different story.
No sending back anything for me and no tip.

Tiger_Moth: Morning from the U.K. Frisky

I was in an Italian restaurant some years ago with my then partner and his children. I ordered a lasagne and on eating it found particles of plastic in the meal. I reported it [in a quiet manner ] the meal was replaced and the whole meal for all of us was cost free compliments of the management.

My one complaint about restaurant food on occasions is that it's not hot enough, and I loathe buffet restaurants a real pet hate with me.
wave

Now that's how it should be.
Everytime my family goes out to eat, it never fails, my sister's food comes out cold. She gets so pissed she tells our waiter(s) and she refuses to eat even if she gets a hot plate.

Selenite: Would depend on circumstances ...
Finding things in my food that shouldn't be there I'd quietly tell the waiter, same if the food was cold, not cooked enough or overcooked...

If the order came out other than what ordered, first I'd find out what it is and if there's another table waiting for it ... if it was mistakenly made for me and I like the sound of the dish, smell, and looked inviting, and similar cost, I'd eat it and may be discover a new dish. If it looks uninviting, I'd ask for what I ordered ...
wave

That's a positive way to handle the situation.

rohaan: I’m a stickler for correctness. I had to be correct in my career...so do many others. First, dining out is frequently an expensive luxury for many. Why would you settle for paying more, if you could do a better job of getting it “right” for far less money, at home? There are a few considerations. For one, know what the particulars are for how you want your steak. Familiarize yourself with exactly what “rare, medium-rare, medium, etc” LOOK like. (Many people who think they want rare actually want medium..) Second, look at the menu CAREFULLY. Your mistake of asking for “number four”, instead of “number six” is not the waiter’s fault. Do not try and mix up the order— asking for substitutes from this item to that item. It’s confusing. Order ala carte if this is the way you want to dine, or go to a deli and purchase individually. Different offerings have varying pricing, and it’s difficult to receipt. Also, restaurants operate regarding volume; it’s unreasonable to expect them to custom-design/micro-manage your order. If, in spite of your diligence and clarity you find the order incorrect, by all means, send it back and request what you want. If you KNOW you’re right (100%), and they put up an argument (this has actually happened to me..) LEAVE. You don’t legally have to pay for it if you didn’t eat it, and they’re not the only game in town.
So true!

LaFonda: Never return your food at a restaurant.

I heard the cook spits in food.

Many nasty people working in a restaurant.

Cook at home, it is cleaner and healthier.
I totally agree because I've seen returned food spit on or slipped on to the nasty floor but not thrown out!

LeeCharming: I would not eat out...with the gestapo rules in place...the muzzle wearing and having to give your personal details to strangers...just to eat out...not a chance

In the past...I would tell them the order is wrong and want a reduction in the cost of my meal...cause of the inconvenience and I doubt I would eat their again...
Good point and I agree. I don't like buffets or pot luck's either!

peace

KNenagh: If they mixed up my order and something wrong is on my plate (e. g. something that would trigger food intolerances) I would talk to the server and send it back. If I just don't like the taste, I would know not to order it again next time.

I wouldn't get the idea to call the manager, I just talk to the server - has always worked for me.
That's a friendly way to handle it.

I wouldn’t complain, rather I would just point out the mistake , so the order can be rectified .

Now I’m confused. No, I don’t think you should have paid for it. Read my comments again, please. I think you misunderstood ME. Thank you. ( feel free to quote where you believe I thought you should pay for it after just one taste/ bite. I did not say that.)
