A few years ago I was dealing with some very heavy feelings of “not belonging”, having a hard time being a part of a group, casual or structured, and this sort of thing. I was on the telephone with a lady I’ve known since grade school. She listened patiently, and then said the most beautiful thing I’ve ever heard:She said, “Ahh, R..., I can’t believe anyone wouldn’t WANT to be your friend”.
It changed my life. She and I are still extremely close friends. They’re coming for dinner this week, actually.
