We live only for as long as we have merit for human or any other rebirth.
Extent of the merit is of course included in subtle-winds at the time of our conception,
The moving energy migrating from life to life since beginningless time is without end.
The causes have there interdependent arising's and of course nothing can become a nothing.

Once upon a time a long time ago I was sold life assurance policies, at that time the Assurance Company produced statistics that explain most people died by age thirty and only few made it to 65 years old. They claimed the cost of assurance was based on those statistics. Now Government explains how human lifespan has increased tenfold because the improved medical service available today. All that as it may or may not be.

Buddhist lama teachings published in Mandala magazine, Lama Zopa Rinpoche discusses the many benefits of having a perfect human rebirth, including how it grants us the opportunity to purify negative karma. Here’s an excerpt from this summary:
Rinpoche explains that having this one-time opportunity makes us unbelievably fortunate—a perfect human rebirth is more precious than the whole sky filled with wish-granting jewels. This is because even skies of wish-granting jewels don’t have the power to purify our negative karma and save us from the lower realms, nor can they give us liberation from samsara and enlightenment, but having a perfect human rebirth can do this.
