Didi7: Recently, I read an article which stated that 19% of the world's Indigenous/Aboriginal peoples are considered as "extreme poor", but do they consider themselves to be such? Who/what determines that? Is it because their lifestyles are minimalistic, in comparison to the rest of the world?

Is someone 'poor' solely because others say so about the way that one looks and lives, or is that determined by how one thinks and feels?

What say you?
could be either confused i suppose. teddybear

I have learnt that not everyone who 'looks' as though they are in need, THINK that they are 'poor'. In fact, some persons who have little (compared with the average person), can be very proud, and easily offended by anyone offering 'charity'. Isn't that because they may seem poor in 'state', but they are not (in their own eyes)?

And then there are those who, as Exred suggests, are both poor in 'state' and in 'mind'

In the animal world, happy is going to sleep in a comfortable, safe place with a full belly. In some, with family members around you. Dry, warm, with no predator trying to eat you. And knowing when you awake, there is food waiting.
Humans however have been made to believe that more is NEVER enough. I grew up in farm country. I suppose some were poor. But, they didn't worry about it. They had shelter, the needs of family and food. Maybe they had to work like mad to have it, but they were proud to earn it.
Poor is a state of mind. Comparing oneself to what others have. Does anyone need a home with 15 bedrooms and 10 bathes?doh My old farm house raised 11 kids. It has a small bedroom downstairs, two little up and the sitting room up. The bathroom was outside. No one cried because they didn't have their own room. It was their life. I see mansions that are vast. Like Trumps Mara Largo. Does he or she even go in all those rooms? Odds are like most people, they have a room or two they live in and the rest is just for show. What a waste. Of course it gives a job to the cleaners.
The idea is one entertains so needs all those rooms. Yep...sure...every day, eh? In the old days large homes were wanted because of relatives who came for long stays.
Because one doesn't have a ton of material goods, it doesnt mean they are poor. And because they do, doesnt mean they are rich..I.E. happy.

Tru, I actually believe that to be true of many homeless persons (even the ones who don't live in a box).

There are two types of poor:- Financially-Poor and Mentally-Poor.
Financially-Poor are those who do not have money to get even their basic needs, some are so poor that they die of hunger without food.

Mentally-Poor are those who have money to fulfill their needs but their need have now turned into greed. They keep comparing themselves to rich people and are desperate to reach their level.
