Hey everyone--Blessings for a great Autumn. So, here are a few businesses and such--(here in Oregon and surrounding) and what I'm wondering is what these may be called in your state/region/country--

1. Fred Meyer--(usually quite large supermarkets with gigantic grocery sections, furniture, electronics, office supplies, clothing and shoes. AKA "Kroger" in nearby states, but "Fred Meyer is only in Oregon, southwest Washington, and Western Idaho. There are literally hundreds of them. {at least 10 in Portland alone)

2. Bi-Mart--smaller "department stores" only in Oregon and fringe of Washington and Idaho. Always having sales, some groceries, but not huge--some clothes, but not lots. Mostly small appliances, household items such as soap, mops, brooms, etc...Used to have Rx, but that part left.

3. Mattress World--speaks for itself

4. Elmers--family style restaurant. I do not remember seeing Elmers anywhere but Oregon.

5. Arctic Circle--fast food, only a few left. Burgers and fries, generally.

6. Machismo Mouse--fast Mexican food. Only saw a few in northern Oregon.

The analogue to Fred Meyer in Michigan is Meijer.

Originally founded as Meijer's.

Then branded as Meijer: Thrifty Acres.

Some consider it the first supercenter

Many mid westerners attach the posses 's to all store names.

Fred Meijer took over the company when his dad died in 1964.

I had never heard that. I do know this--The downtown Portland (Oregon) Fred Meyer was the first store on the west coast to have 'auto-mat' style cafeterias--(you put your coin in the slot, open a little glass door and take out the dish, thus being able to create your own lunch, etc..) These were well known in NYC in the 20's through the , well, I suppose there are still a few....(let me google it) Hey, just found out--they closed in 1991, but then re-opened in Jersey City. Hey!!laugh

Piggly Wiggly®, America's first true self-service grocery store, was founded in Memphis, Tennessee in 1916 by Clarence Saunders. Today there are more than 500 Piggly Wiggly® stores serving communities in 18 states.

Tom Thumb was founded in 1948 by J.R. Bost and Robert B. Cullum as Tom Thumb Food Stores after acquiring 6 Toro supermarkets (Cullum was grocery supplier to Toro when Toro folded, and the owner fled the country). It was once a publicly traded company on the NYSE under the name Cullum Companies.

Kroger Co., formerly (1883–1902) Great Western Tea Company and (1902–46) Kroger Grocery and Baking Co., American chain of supermarkets and related retail businesses. In the early 21st century, Kroger was the world's third largest retailer and the largest chain of freestanding supermarkets in the United States.

Interesting thread Ro…

There’s a few new developments that make this somewhat darker.

Kroger is going to buy Albertsons, which owns Safeway as well. For us, in the PNW, it means that all grocery stores (Fred, Safeway, Albertsons, Ralph’s) will be owned by one company. It’s a $24B+ deal that will basically end competitive pricing across the board, with the exception of Walmart. I think that is the essence of a monopoly and does not bode well for us, the consumers.

It won’t matter what the name on the building is, it will be the same choices, same as pricing and a huge dominant force of retail.

I wonder what the feds will think of this mega-merger? Remember AT&T/Southwestern Bell?

I find all of the "Kroger Family" stores interesting. My latest review on the internet shows 19 outfits all collectively a Krogers. I'll footnote a few, (not all had very inclusive info..)
Bakers, City Market, Dillons, Food 4 Less, Foods Co., Fred Meyer, Fry's (California, Arizona, Nevada, New Mexico), Gerbes, Jay C Food Store, King Sooper, Kroger, Mariano, Metro Market, PayLess SuperMart (NOT the drugstores!) Pick N Save (only in Wisconsin), QFC Oregon and Washington(integrated into all Kroger, for some reason) Ralph's (Oregon, California) Ruler, and Smith's Food & Drug (gets confused all the time because there are many Mom and Pops called this that are not Kroger...

handshake raining here at the beach--Roseburg?

After reading your comment, I started thinking of so many things consistent with monopolies--for instance, in my opinion and decades of observation, the qualifying boards for hospitals and rehabilitation centers appear to be far more severe with the smaller, family-owned facilities than they are with the large, corporate-type ones. Coincidence? Hmmm.......by the same token, it can be dicey for someone to hire out as a "handyman" not having various licenses and/or belonging to a guild or union. Street vendors cannot sell jewelry or other trinkets without getting an expensive permit that certainly outweighs what they could earn. It's a kerfuffle...

I gotta mention this money machine:

A burger shop strategically place next to a Shell out westbund highway from Oslo.
They open at 10am and close at midnight, 365 days a year.
They own the tiny house themselves, no rent.
Here is the genius at play:
The simplicity! One burger size fit all and stack two on top of each other if you want a double'.
And then they take one large spoon of a salad-souce mix patented in 1982, still the same today.
Want cheese on it or perhaps the pineapple ring? (hawaii) will that is your options... only.
It's so simple it's unbeliveable and there is always a que there... whole day through!

It's called Texburger and it's run by one pakistan family, whom by now are multimillionares :)

According to this article (and photos too) they sell 1000 burgers a day.... lol

Everyone seems to like 'Shake-A-Burger', also our local bowling alley has quite a foodies following. Not really into fast food, but out on the cape there is a lone Dairy Queen. For some reason, this one seems much better than the other DQ's in Oregon.....
