I just purchased a new TV, (a couple of weeks back now) of which i currently hold mixed feelings. I bought my last new TV after returning from emergency accommodation due to a slight flooding incident when the River Murray rose a lot. Having just got back I bought what at the time i was willing to afford not knowing what the rest might cost. It was more than a month's rent on the storage locker but not a whole lot more. Well, i had nothing but trouble with it... thus my decision just recently to buy something a little more expensive. Not a whole lot more when you factor in the first one also came with a shipping charge but more... by almost double.
Believe it or not my biggest concern when I came up with the idea, was what in the name of Jerry Lewis was I going to do with the first 50 inch TV? Internet wise it worked well. Free to air TV not so much. I decided the only place possible without sliding it between the sofa and the wall and forgetting about it altogether, was hang it in front of my bed. But that meant moving a book case and finding a new location for that. Not so easy considering the smallness of my place and my complete laziness.
Either way, I bought a wall mount.
If any of you have ever read my profile I state that the only sport I ever watch, start to finish, is NFL, American Gridiron. If my TV gets that, then other than every second or third Survivor US, the original before franchising, the rest is just flashing lights and usually, annoying sound.
On the plus side, I don't have to try and run an antenna cable into my bedroom.
On the found out only after I set my new TV up, it doesn't have a 7plus app and that was my backup to watch NFL games when the TV antenna played up.
So I did a bit of research and found what I hope to be the perfect solution. I found a reference to something called a Amazon Fire Stick. Then I found what I was looking for, a digital STB. It looks something like a tiny Flying Saucer but with a clock readout. They had 3 levels based on Rom and Ram. The highest was 4GB / 64GB with an expansion of 64GB through a flash drive. HDMI out, 2 USB ports, can run movies or music through a HDD, has WiFi, (maybe bluetooth, not sure, don't care either way.)
It is the Android equivalent to the Fire Stick, from what I could tell.
And it was half the price of what some people were asking for the former. I ordered a new HDMI cable at the same time. The cable arrived last Thursday but it only had to come from Melbourne. The STB is coming from Sydney. The estimated delivery is this Wednesday.
I think then, my new 50 inch TV will be what I consider, perfect. W.

My thank you for your input,
I considered that.
Thing is, the TV antenna works way better with this TV than the cheap one. And if truth be told better than the one before that, going all the way back to 2010. I did a check of what apps got online and what either crashed or just died. With the exception of Ten, Nine and 7, whatever else is there, I never use, and nine works. But the new STB has all the same apps and quite possibly, a whole lot more.
And for $55 i saved myself driving 130kms round trip and going through all the motions of explaining exactly what is going on with the tv, bringing the new one back, unpacking and setting up that. And what if i find the replacement is the same, or worse?
It took me a lot of work and time to narrow down which specific Tv I was going to spend my money to replace the other near new tv. My luck also is that mine was the last they had (due to software faults?) and I'd be forced to quickly decide a replacement or bring this back home knowing it does what i mainly want it to, record the two NFL games we get here down under. This TV, the new one, has an incredible picture and PVR. It is like two button clicks on the remote and the show is recording or it is in the scheduled list. Two clicks on the same button does either automatically. I like that. It records and allows for signal drop out and edits the low signal pixelation out. I would be watching a Game and the timer skips down a few minutes almost instantly when the signal drops out. The picture just takes off from the new signal grab. I like that too. This new STB has every streaming app available and if it is not pre loaded, it can download from (the ad listed 2 app stores).
I would probably have bought the STB even if the streaming apps worked fine on the Tv, the PVR is perfect but media playback is limited in codecs whereas the STB will play every digital movie i own on HDD. If the store swaps the Tv no questions asked, the perfect working replacement will still not be able to play more than 50% of the movies on the drive. And for some reason tubi endlessly buffers on this Tv whereas on the old one, it never did.
I sometimes subscribe to the philosophy that it is better the devil you know intimately to unfavorable or ineffectual optional outcomes.
And $65 with a new 8K HDMI cable, it seemed a much easier all round less stressful way to go. Not to mention it hits two birds with the one stone. Besides, the Tv has a three year warranty. I can take it back if the problem escalates. W.

Track16: I use a 40 inch tv for a computer monitor. I'll never go back.
I use a 24 inch hooked up to my laptop. Using a HDMI cable I can also connect to my Tv but it is not directly in front of my lounge chair, my 24 inch screen is. I spend way more time on the computer than I do watching Tv. Tv is like what I watch after I shut down for the day. Usually just in time to watch a few sitcoms, if the antenna signal is working. W.

What's that saying? I haven't got a thing to say so I will say it with an annoying meme.
Good for you, or would you have preferred i respond with the little dancing cartoon emoticons, so you could better understand what i was saying?
Sorry, i don't speak emoticon. W.

Stringy_Bob: Cool story bro.
Thanks, I feel I have my moments. I thought I'd try a touch of real life mixed in with the other stuff I write.
The last thing I would want, is to be thought of as having a theme. No that's not it... of being a one track pony. W.

Oh, my God Monkey Balls. you are not going to believe this. I am so glad I never took this TV back. It just finished the Software / Firmware Upgrade. I went from about 40 free to air channels to Thousands of online channels. So many I have no idea. The highest is 9,000 something and the one below that is 8,600 something and then it is almost one at a time.
This TV just blew my mind, and it only cost about $700 Au. That's like $400 US.
Boom! My mind is blown. W.
