Anyone here on the organ donor program??

What were your reasons for choosing to be - or not to be - a donor?

I signed my Alberta health card stating I'd donate my organ's. I figure "I'm dead! What do I need them for? Might as well let them use whatever they can on someone else!".

I have often thought about it but that is honestly as far as I made it... although after reading Dougie's response I definately agree it is something to do...

Might as well let someone else live! I'm not going to need them. Plus, if you think of it this way, a part of you will live on!

Your answer Dougie is part of my concern and one of the reasons i have not actually gone through with it...though i've often thought i would like to...

You're right when you say..." I figure "I'm dead! What do I need them for?"....

But how do you know they did ALL they could to save you...or was the need for whatever organ you're donating greater than trying them giving their all to save your life??

Well the joke will be on them when they cut me open. I've done alot of drug's in my life, so I'll be surprised if they can use anything anyway! rolling on the floor laughing Like I said though, I'll be dead anyway so I won't know the difference! Here in Alberta, all you have to do to be an organ donor is just sign the back of your health care card. It's easier out here then it is in Ontario. I know, I'm from back there.

I am on the organ donor program and even had 'the discussion' with my son...professor ...and he has signed my card, which is now also linked to my health card!!!

Why? I know at least two people who have received organs and can now go on to live healthier lives...if in death I can do something to help someone that I couldn't help in life, why not?dunno

Just my personal opinion!! Ewwwww....I'm feeling very philosophical and introspective and that can't be good at this hour!!rolling on the floor laughing

You make a valid point that another of my family members brought up to not long ago when this same discussion came up! I figure if I'm that close to not making it that my organs are being considered for harvesting...I probably don't want to survive it anyways!!dunno

LOL...reading the replies for this question reminded me of the book...

It was the story about parents who purposely had a child to "harvest" transplants for another child they had who was dying but no match could be found for her...

She took her parents to court over this...

Interesting book...very emotional...very thought provoking...

I have had a "liver resection" done...they removed 60% of my liver..thankfully it is the one organ in your body that regenerates itself and because i still had a portion left i was not in need of a transplant....so I have never been faced with this type of dilemma

I haven't done it yet but I should. It's not that I never wanted to just never bothered yet. Heck i'd give someone a kidney now if they needed one.

Just hope no one will need a liver when I'm dead. This one aint so good :(

and wikked its not like our bodies go anywhere, its just our souls that live a eternal life...so why not give what you can and die knowing that someone else will benefit from what you can freely give them....life
