All,

Since I have been on the site I have learned much, great insight from many. But consistantly I see a perception that; and undoubtably cause the U.S. it out there making mistakes where everyone can see...is that we as a people (americans) are just greedy, selfish, violent, self centered and and and.

Hey, having served..I know well the mistakes...but also the good that happens (funny how bad is reported and under the microscope but not the good). I cannot and will not subscribe to this...we are just war mongers and the rest.

All people have issues, in all countries and unfortunately sad sells news better than good. And the states we are so under the microscope all we see or hear is that which is bad. But is it really?

If i had a good answer to the nightmare, I would give it. But I too am human and don't have a good answer. For me, I just do what I can...such as learning from all of you. Hoping that perhaps you might learn something from me. But like the professor....if i take an issue off line to discuss, to get to a bottom line and get shut out...i also begin to wonder, whats the point?

Thanks for listening.

It is not America as a nation that is responsible for the majority (and being a European I stress the MAJORITY) of people having the whole war mongerer's etc view. It is the person one George double yah Bush that presents this impression.
I do not doubt that he was doing what HE thought was right I just honestly wonder if he represents which he should, the American opinion. Some of the quotes that have appeared in the media have revealed him to be a very self satisfying president. I, for one am most definitely not pro war, nor am I criticising Americans.
But in all honesty, it has been him that has presented his nation in a bad light.
My brother in law, originally from New Jersey is moving with my sister and my two nieces to the states this coming July and sometimes I do worry
what kind of an environment they will be exposed to.
No matter what anyone says, a few years ago especially in Ireland we were
kind of obsessed with American culture, taking on its trends even being envious of its stature, now times have changed I am only twenty and have noticed in recent years that people are starting to frown upon and have even become anti American.
But who is responsible and how do you ratify the situation before it becomes toxic?
Yes, all countries do have their issues but Irelands IRA activity has decreased hugely in recent years, mainly because our Government took steps to STOP the violence, not ones to increase it.

And I agree, but we both know how american politics work don't we? President Bush is the figure head, he is what all see but it doesn't happen without the U.S. Congress of which there are 100 and the U.S. representatives of which there are about 435 and all of which we as americans elected?

What a great post and very true.

I think that America has become its own worse enemy. If I can generalize without insulting I would have to say we are short sighted, egotistical and too quick to point our fingers at others.

I think the worst aspect is the way our political system has evolved into nothing more than mud slinging and flat out lies in order to discredit. There are very few real issues being addressed anymore, it's all finger pointing and name calling. This goes equally from both the major parties depending on who's in office or who holds the majority i.e. it was Clinton before, Bush now and it will continue with the next president.

We can't expect anyone to look upon us as a nation or a people with any sense of respect until we stop behaving like children and have some self respect. We need to stop pandering to these folks when they resort to the mud slinging and make them stick to the issues and their agendas. If we don't our reputation will continue to decline.

What's the first thing you want your enemy to do? Underestimate you. Imagine how many people would stop laughing if they thought Bush had a decent IQ.

The art of War, Good book. I'd also recommend the Dokkodo by Mirimoto Musashi.

I believe those that think he's stupid aren't thinking clearly. One doesn't get to that position by being stupid or by only having the right friends.

once again I'm not American. But watching Election companies and reading from the press. I've got the feeling that level of IQ doesn't have anything to do with a potential candidate ....... The ammount of a bank account is more essential. What is your thought on this one? Am I wrong?

True enough, They're already talking about how much each candidate has raised or will raise raise in coming months. Perhaps all three factors (Money, Friends and intelligence) along with others are necessary elements but someone lacking either of those three would never make it to that office.

I just think most of what is said about some people, especially politicians, is based on opinion and emotion instead of fact.

Betting pools have already started on the odds of Obama surviving til election day. Many are looking at the Kennedys assasinations, MLK and see a comon factor of being against the current war of the day....Obama is clear and precise about his proposed solutions, Hillary Clinton will / would continue the war(s) so for all intents and purposes, she too is now considered part of the "military-industrial complex". Interesting analogies....
Do American leaders understand that "terrorism" against their country and its citizens is largely in reaction to their aggressive and violent foreign policy, or do they genuinely not know why America is so hated? Here are two answers:
Former president Jimmy Carter:
"We sent Marines into Lebanon and you only have to go to Lebanon, to Syria or to Jordan to witness first-hand the intense hatred among many people for the United States because we bombed and shelled and unmercifully killed totally innocent villagers---women and children and farmers and housewives---in those villages around Beirut...As a result of that...we became kind of a Satan in the minds of those who are deeply resentful. That is what precipitated the taking of our hostages and that is what has precipitated some of the terrorist attacks."
Then Secretary of State Colin Powell, writing of what preceded the 1983 attack on the US Marine barracks in Lebanon:
"The Uss New Jersey started hurling 16-inch shells into the mountains above Beirut, in World War Two style, as if we were softening up the beaches on some Pacific atoll prior to an invasion. What we tend to always overlook in such situations is that other people will react much as we would."
The ensuing "terrorist" attack against the US Marine barracks in Lebanon took the lives of 241 American military personnel. And Reagan retreated in shock....

Well, te election will be interesting. I'm just hoping those running for office are concentrating more on the issues rather than playing name games against their opponents. Obama seems to be starting out very well.
