Soldiers view on war

That men are drawn to war is no surprise. How old are boys before they turn a finger and thumb into a pistol? Long before they love girls, they love war, at least everything they imagine war to be: guns and explosions and manliness and courage. When my neighbors and I played war as kids, there was no fear or sorrow or cowardice. Death was temporary, usually as fast as you could count to sixty and jump back into the game. We didn't know yet about the darkness. And young men are just slightly older versions of those boys, still loving the unknown, perhaps pumped up on dreams of duty and heroism and the intoxicating power of weapons. In time, war dispels many such notions, and more than a few men find that being freed from society's professed revulsion to killing is really no freedom at all, but a lonely burden. Yet even at its lowest points, war is like nothing else. Our culture craves experience, and that is war's strong suit. War peels back the skin, and you live with a layer of nerves exposed, overdosing on your surroundings, when everything seems all wrong and just right, in a way that makes perfect sense. And then you almost die but don't, and are born again, stoned on life and mocking death. The explosions and gunfire fry your nerves, but you want to hear them all the same. Something's going down!

For those who know, this is the open secret: War is exciting. Sometimes I was in awe of this, and sometimes I felt low and mean for loving it, but I loved it still. Even in its quiet moments, war is brighter, louder, brasher, more fun, more tragic, more wasteful. More. More of everything. And even then I knew I would someday miss it, this life so strange. Today the war has distilled to moments and feelings, and somewhere in these memories is the reason for the wistfulness.

War is something that only a damn fool would love and most of all to say it is exciting to feel fear, to kill and to be a hero. A soldier fights for what he believes in, justice, freedom from terror and from others imposing their rules and culture upon him, his family and country.

A good soldier hate wars, an idiot boast that wars are good to prove "manhood", courage and think that killing another human being is something to be proud about.

Sorry I disagree with you, but I think you are and was an American Soldier. I was a British Soldier for many years - we were trained to fight wars, but we are also taught about compassion towards our enemy. That may be the reason why a British Soldier is feared and much respected by all Nations throughout the world. On the other hand, ask the same question about an American Soldier and the answer will always be "a damn trigger happy arsehole, who thinks that having a weapon in his hands is his licence to kill".

Americas are not liked throughout the world - Why?? - Search for an answer. In Europe, Americans wants to impose their culture (and they have very little of that), and their way of life onto others. In Central and South America, the USA wants to impose their way of life on others. What the US should be doing is to guide, help and assist other Nations and not to use their might to force people to do what America wants.

When I was last in Texas, many American still thinks that the German Police are Gestapos, that France is part of the United Kingdom and Holland - they never heard of that country. I think that the Schools should educate the children about the rest of the world. I looked at the US television programme and very little educational knowledge is shown - thank GOD I was able to see the BBC (British Broadcasting Corporation) World News.

I think you should study this and search your mind and ask yourself many questions before writing about the Glorification of Wars. What is an Army??? Just a group of men bound together to RIGHT the WRONGS of Politicians. What is Terror??? A group of idiots trying to impose their thoughts onto others through their idealism, religious beliefs, and Glorifications.

Thank you Shawn for expressing what others have trouble putting in words. I know it took a lot of soul searching to come up with this post and all I can say is; thank you, you're a good man.

Shawn, you'll have a lot of nay sayers, skeptics, and critics. You'll have people pushing their political agendas and their mightier than thou thoughts. Ignore them, they are shallow opportunists that will never understand, what it is to be a man.

Thanks again for expressing your feelings and for serving.

Okay check it out.
As a Scout/sniper medic for the infamous 506th of the 101st airborne division freshly back from the last great fight of Iraq, being the Al Anbar province's city of Ramadi I think I have a good grasp on the realities of war, good and bad, and would like to expand upon what the razorback arkansasian has mention.

I was one of those guys who went in the service early in the 90's got out then came back in once the fighting broke out in Iraq. War is hell is a great line that describes life on the battle field. Another line would be it was the best of times it was the worst of times.

The worst times ever had are just exactly what you think they would be, friends getting wounded or dying, Ive dealt with that many times, approximately 1 out of 6 men from my battalion was wounded due to direct actions with the enemy. second to that were the feelings of loss you felt knowing that your family was back home living their lives without you (for me anyway).

The best of times, are not the explosions or the fire fights, but the way in which buddies look out for buddies. Knowing that he is there with you and for you, NO MATTER WHAT. He will die for you to make sure that you make it home to your family. The unselfishness of man at his best, the bonds are unbreakable.

war is for the most part boring....what?....how can this be?
there are extremely long waits for only a thirty minute firefight, which seems like days when your in one, but the reality is we dont fight 24hours a day, its impossible.

god bless you all, a true soldier doesnt want your praise or acknowledgement, he would proudly serve you for the honor of defending your great nations way of life.

Thanks rzrback and doc. I know it is hard for others to realize what it is like to be the first line of defense. Those who put themselves in harms way for others have my utmost respect and support. It is easy to place a label on others, but where exactly would we be without soldiers, firemen/women, policemen/women? It takes a person willing to place the value of their life aside to protect others, truly the highest and most noble thing one can do for another. Thank you!

I am a man who's choosen profession is to save lives of the men and women who decide to fight for freedoms that we enjoy everyday, even on this little internet thing and where you are down under, some poor guy gave his life at one time or another so that even australia could be free from the tyrany that runs rampant thoughout the world, without guys like us sir someone would surely as there is a sun in the sky take what you pride yourself with the most...your head. or maybe we should just fight the people who would want us dead for failing to conform to their ways with a hug and a foster's.comfort

I highly respect any man or woman that fights for their country after all it is a choice as they are not forced to do so anymore!!!!!

It takes a special kind of person to voluntarily go to war knowing they may never come home!!!!!!!!!!

God Bless all the men an women who have fought for their countries and made it home and a special blessing for those who didn't!!!!!!!!!!
