If you are speaking in terms of online dating then, personally, a connection of some sort would have to be made before meeting...
Otherwise, I wouldn't bother. Online or offline though, I can feel/tell if there is a connection pretty much right away. How "strong" that connection is/could be may or may not take longer...

I agree ..... even online a connection is necessary to continue talking to someone ....... I think that we all realize pretty well from the first few letters if we think there is a possibility of "something more".
Just like when we meet someone in person ... I think that its a natural thing that happens ..... after that its determining the connection, getting to know the person as much as possible, and whether both people are going in the same direction.

I think it can happen anytime, when you meet, or when you first speak, or when you mail each other. There ultimately will be something that keeps you both interested in wanting to keep in touch hence the connection is made.
