I was excited about an art thread that was started about abstract art ... I think Wizzie started it.

Anyway ... I would love to see what others think about abstract art.

Here is my reply to the original thread post:

Well I would love to see some examples of your work to make a more educated reply. But in my opinion abstract art is one of the most difficult genres no matter what medium you are using. For it to be good it has to show emotion without conventional form. Which means you need a real knowledge of color and movement. I think anyone who takes on abstract art is taking on a challenge ... Kudos to you! And don't let uneducated people tell you that it isn't hard because it is computer generated .. that's just not true. Good luck to you!handshake cheers

Picasso's "Guernica" is one of my all time faves...anything by Jackson Pollack too. Not sure about the spelling on those...

Wowthumbs up Guernica ... good Picasso choice, I like that one as well, now THAT is emotion. And Pollack is one of my favorite abstract artists. Alot of emotion in his works that show his rage and passion. wine

Emotion is the key word for me.

Secondly it must demonstrate at least some technical ability and be visually pleasing to the eye.

If it looks like something my 10 year old daughter could do at school...it irritates me no end. dunno

Talking sculpture.. My favourite is Alberto Giacometti...the emotion and movement he could display in metal is astounding.

cheers

ANY form of art is subject to the interpretation of the individual ... therein lies the beauty. You gain from it what you will and hopefully that gain will be what the artist intended. I generally work in realism or impressionism. But I have had people come to me with totally different emotional responses to even these works than what was intended when creating them.

Abstract is totally emotionally driven work. And yes, most who are uneducated in art, movement or color will just "follow along" as to not look ignorant to those around them. Which is sad because even an uneducated person can gain from it if they let themselves REALLY look and study it. What you end up coming away with is completely up to you ... but art is exspression to it's hilt and if you allow it to talk to you it will. The colors MEAN something, the movement MEANS something ... even Pollacks spatters and splatters MEAN something. And it is all there for the reading.

Thanks for your opinion .. makes the thread more enjoyablethumbs up

I saw the orifinal "Guernica" at the MOMA in New York many years ago. It is a very powerful statement of the atrocities of war on innocent people and even animals who had nothing to do with politics and governments.

laugh Yeah, that can a problem with most when looking at the abstract.

Next time you look at an abstract try viewing it with your heart. Let the colors and/or the movement talk to you. You will be amazed at what you will hear. wink handshake cheers

I've seen his site. Computer generated art is hard grasp. My nephew won awards for his graphic Designs. I have some very expensive 3D programs That will create just about anything. I just find it hard to call it art.dunno

I think ART is anything that conveys feelings, emotions, thoughts, even political views in a sensory way. Even if you have help from a computer program ... if it is conveying YOUR feelings or thoughts individually ... sure that can be considered art. Maybe not award winning masterpieces but art all the same.

I guess that's true. Maybe it would be considered more surreal? I think we all just put modern art of any type under an "abstract" umbrella.
