What dangers are there of plageurism on a sight like CS? If I posted my writing, could someone steal it without me being able to legally prove it was mine first? confused

Yes they could! If you do not have it copyrighted. Be careful

Good question. This site may even have some proprietary rights with respect to things written here (though I doubt it). Copyrighting, unlike patenting, isn't something to apply for; you implicitly have the right to your written material under normal circumstances, and don't give up that right (unlike patenting) by publicly disclosing it. If someone takes your online material and claims authorship (and was able to sell it), I think you could claim plagiarism/copyright infringement, unless you gave persmission or agreed otherwise.

You might wish to check into that a bit before posting something you think may be published in the future, but I sincerely doubt anyone would take your stuff and attempt to market it (and you would almost certainly have recourse if they did).

The answer is yes.
Anything you post... anything... can be copied.
Even if you have it copyrighted, it can be copied.
The internet is a public place, much like that intersection you may have drove through... the one with the cam on it. Everything you do is recorded to some degree.
If you actually had a copyrighted piece of work plagiarized, you would still have to track down the details & prove all the facts. It sounds so much easier than it actually is.

Right, but copying something and attempting to market it (fraudulently) are two different things.

Either way, proving it would be the biggest task.
Getting it removed from a post or profile is the best you can hope for.
Copies of things posted can still exist & once they are made public, they are just that.
There is no way to control something that has been made public.

One way to test the theory is to type your profile name into your toolbar.
You may just be amazed at how much of your information is already out there.
Many people don't even realize how widely spread their personal information is...
let alone where it may end up.

you can read up on this topic here

Digital Millenium Copyright Act

This sort of thing comes up a lot on the game I make content for.
Copyright, no copyright, people will still *borrow* things if they feel the urge.
Words are simple to cut and paste where as textures and such are a bit more difficult to rip from a game, but not difficult enough to suit me.
So, I guess it all boils down to how important is keeping your writings, YOUR writings, and DMCA complaints can be difficult.

My advice is not to post your 1,000 page novel as a blog! conversing grin
