The last weeks/months seem a little blurry at times. I was informed at the
hospital I was attending that I had end stage kidney failure. The paths open
to me were fairly simple
1. Do nothing and the consequence would be death.
2. Dialysis. Either haemo-dialysis which is basically being connected to a machine
usually in hospital, for 3 days a week or peritoneal dialysis, a system of fluid
transfer through the peritoneum on a daily basis normally carried out at home
3. Transplant, cadavaric or live which offered the most "promising" or "back to normal"
situation.

Life can be full of surprises and quandaries , this one is certainly high on the list of
trying times for me.

My mind has not been free of tangled thoughts for a while in the roller coaster of the
last few months and yet events have become more focused.

I have learnt that this is a disease affecting a surprisingly large number of people
and that there have been remarkable advances over the last 20 years or so.

What are peoples thoughts on the ideas of dialysis, transplant etc?

Hi Class, really sorry to hear of your health problems, I hope that whichever you decide works well for you. Would you be required to be on a waiting list of some sort if you opted for the transplant? Whats it like there in UK for these things?

There is a waiting list for what they call cadaveric, can be years,
depends on supply and a match coming up.

If I get a live match there is no waiting. From what I have seen
although the situation has improved over the years there is a shortage
of available transplant organs. That is people who donate their organs
after death.

Its incredible that there is a shortage, I remember when I was in the UK there was a huge "carry the card" campaign - maybe you could look to other countries? conversing

In 2002 my renal system shut down due to a massive infection. Fortunately, I was hospitalized in the nick of time, or acidosis would have destroyed my entire internal tissue structure.

Renal failure is no joking matter. It can change your life drastically and in so many small and large ways. I'm sorry to hear about your health problems, class. Trust me when I say I consider you a colleague, and I don't like any of my peers suffering like this. Hopefully you will get the care you need, either in the form of dialysis or in the form of a transplant. My prayers for a positive resolution to this.

Take care!

Hey, buddy.... I got a kidney I want to sell for the right price. Good working condition, younger than yours and well taken care of.

Now before anyone gets apalled. This is no joke!

If interested, contact me.

Serious about this. I could live with one kidney and you seem like somebody who has more of a purpose in this life than me. I've found what I desired in life, so no fretting here. thumbs up

Your thoughts and words are certainly appreciated Tet.

I am taking various drugs to help rebalance the system and they are
planning a fistula in readiness for dialysis. Hospital visits and doctors
appointments fill my week and the treatment I am receiving is amazing.

Life holds surprises in all forms and there's always an upside

Thanks for the offer zoom. As far as transplant law goes in the UK I don't think
it is allowed to pay directly for body parts. There is an allowance for expenses

You're right about living with one kidney though, apparently the kidney that is left
actually grows a little larger and compensates for the loss and function continues
as normal.

Glad you've found your life's desire .

Although the carry the card campaign had some success with a large number of people
joining up apparently there is still a desperate shortage of organs with more than 8,000
people in the UK needing an organ transplant. Last year more than 400 people died
before getting that second chance a transplant could have given them.

I think the risks involved in receiving a transplant abroad
can be too high and so at the moment the UK is looking
like the best option.

I am so sorry to hear this Class.I have a end stage renal problem that causes my red blood cells to not rebuild. My options were blood transfusions or procrit shots. They just told me no more shots. They cost 6000 per shot and I was taking 2 a month. The waiting list for a kidney here is 2 years. But i decided at my age,I might not make it thru a transplant,I had 2 daughters and a g-daughter offer a kidney. But I told the Dr today, no more transfusions, and no transplant. Its now in Gods hands.Good luck and God Bless hug

I'm so sorry to hear about yours situation.hug
all of the choices come with extremely tough decisions....i was in the medical field, i know the advances are miraculous, however the donor issue is a problem mainly because of rejection of the new organ.

Basically you're stuck with number 2 leading to number 3.....the body can take only so much dialysis before that will stop working..........for some it's years for others mere months.

start with friends and family, talk to them and see who may be willing to donate(siblings are your best bet, then your children)

I wish you all the best!handshake comfort hug

Well, if you ask me, the option is always for transplant if available and dialysis if not. My mother had end stage renal failure and it was a contributing factor in her death, but because of her other existing medical conditions with her heart adn diabetes, she was not a good candidate for transplant. There was talk of her starting dialysis but the disease had progressed to far at that point. I am very sorry for this diagnosis and I wish you all of the best. I hope you find the option that will work best for you and you have my prayers!

Class,

I'm so sorry to learn of this. blues It appears that you're at a real crossroads on what to do. I'd go with option 2 at this time as it will allow you be able to be home. I'm also a card carrying donor member and have been since 1997. thumbs up

Zoom,

As simple as it may sound to be able to donate a kidney, one kidney not only has to look good on paper, but there's also blood typing that has to be matched.countless tests to make sure that everything matches up etc...your offer is a nice one. wine
