Even though I am on this site, I really don't think you can get to know someone through the internet. The only time you really get to know them is when you meet. Even phonecalls, and msn type conversations do not let you know the real person.
And more importantly, I truly believe that there has to be that 'spark' when you meet.
So, what the heck am I doing here??? Oh, I know! Talking rubbish on the forums, and having a damned good flirt!

Even with all the resources we have here I have to agree with Karen, you can't really know someone until you meet and spend time together.
I met a guy that said he was a social drinker.
Turns out anytime he is not working is a social occasion.
I met a guy that said he was old fashioned and likes to treat his women as ladies.
Turns out he believes that women have no justifiable opinions.

Ditto...to the letter....as they say in the theatre, it aint over til the fat lady sings.....with online dating, you never know who or what you're dealing with until you've met, felt the spark of interest, spent that dinner date together, and kissed goodbye...and even then you don't know.....
In profiles, a lot of people present themselves in the best possible light, let's call it creative licence...from the best photo of themselves that's 7 years out of date, to avoiding entirely to mention that they're actually still married, or in a relationship...it's called spreading your bets.....that's why I've posted the ugliest picture possible, and present myself as a complete twit....you're going to be delighted when you actually meet me!!....

Because of where i live i mainly get emails from very young men , who think i have a big bank account and should be grateful for the interest. When i politely tell them 'No thanks your young enough to be my son!' i get abusive emails in response. (think i have the biggest blocked list on CS!)

I think e-romance is every bit as random as the normal kind, and in a way even more so because people can tell little 'white lies'
.. however having been used to 'random' in the days of yore.. I would say the same rules apply..
Do ye like the look of eachother
Do ye share the same/similiar interests
Do ye find it easy to chat and get along
Do ye respect one another
with a little delving the above should become apparent and an online relationship can grow into something stronger...

It makes you wonder why some still keep using these sorta sites to find what so many of us see as the holy grail - real, and very true love.
So, I'm wondering what we can do to evaluate a personality, in this e-environment, more accurately.
What techniques do you use? How do you go about determining whether a person is trustworthy enough to open up to in a romantic fashion?
