Have u ever tried to learn a new language after the age of 25? How long does it take to become fluent.... I am in a land where no body speaks my mother tounge and I am learning slowly to learn the culture and language
my sister has just moved to spain, before she went she was going to spanish classes, now since she is over there she is still going to spanish classes, i also believe its down to the individual.
It depends on how you interact with the people you are living with. Stay inside and you won't learn much. Let others be your teacher. Learn with your hands and feet. No I'm not talking rot but from experience. Ok I was a couple of years younger when I came to the Netherlands but I had to learn Dutch from scratch and I know how difficult it is. If you open up and are not afraid of making mistakes then you should be alright. It all comes down to the individual.

I have been here in Thailand for more than two years but my Thai is as bad as a new comer unlike my friends who came here with me. They speak fluent Thai and can converse with Thai people just like them. Some of them enrolled in language centers that offer Thai Language and they talk with the local people all the time. I'm not that interested that I always ask my Thai friends to do some translation. English is enough for me, its my third language actually and I could speak other few languages other than English.
During my trips to the borders, I came across with other nationalities who are more fluent than my friends. I asked them on how long did it take them to muster the local tongue and some said 6 months, some said one year or more.
The guys are right it depends on how interested u are to learn the local tongue plus get a private tutor or buy books that teach conversation and practice all the time( talk with the people). It may take time but its you who can tell how long one takes u to be fluent.
i think people are better than each other at doing certain things. i have a problem with finding my way to a place even if i have been shown the way like 10 times. languages ? ..... i am very good at that. between the ages of 25 and 29, i have learnt about 5 languages and i speak them properly. i am learning another one now.
I learned a new language at age 28. It took me a year to become fluent, but that was after immersing myself completely in the language, by watching TV and doing picture with word association, listenting to the radio, reading the newspapers and of course, conversing with people on an almost daily basis at the local cafe.
