I think it's exactly what it's meant to be.. a social place where people can get to know each other better.. and maybe see if they want to take it further.
Same as anywhere in RL too really... you wouldn't just walk into a bar (or wherever) and ask someone on a date would you. You would get to know eachother a little more in some way first, THEN decide.

I think a big reason is that most "regulars" on here live very far away from each other. A date involving a compatible CS member could very well involve a 4,000 + mile plane ride. Pretty tough to be more then acquaintances.
