Hugz_n_Kissez: The Apparitions....Quietly sitting before a small fire,
A lone Indian begins a ceremonial respect.
Reaching into a pouch,
He brings out a matter of medicine.
Which he offers to the four winds,
To Mother Earth and all his relations.
And from his heart, soul and mind,
He speaks to the medicine,
Using a language taught to him,
A language carried through time,
By the apparitions before him,
His ancestors. With words flowing from his heart,
Of the fire he speaks.
He ask the medicine for guidance,
To protect his people,
So that they will live a good life
And that their hearts, souls and minds,
Will be filled with the
Wisdom, knowledge and understanding
Of life and truth,
The traditional ways given to them,
As told through the medicine
By the apparitions before him,
His ancestors.Gently he sprinkles the medicine upon the fire.
He has spoken words to the medicine
Using the old language of his people,
Words that the medicine knows.
For such words are of a language
That have been used for centuries
In such a sacred manner.
Words that the medicine recognizes,
Words of life that come from no book,
Words that in fact allow the medicine to work.
This the lone Indian knows,
For he is given a nod of approval
By the apparitions before him,
His ancestors. And as the smoke heads upward,
Carrying the medicine and words,
An Eagle hover's above accepting the message,
Which will be delivered in a sacred manner.
And the apparitions of time gone by know
The Indian world will live on.
Such are the ways of a people,
Guided by apparitions of time gone by.
For here, there is no circus, no money,
No English words, no books, no mockery,
Just the reality of something very sacred,
Passed on to a people
By the apparitions who guide us,
The ancestors of yesterday...
Who guide only their people...

-by Larry Kibby-

Another beautiful poem....

Hugz_n_Kissez: Yes it does...It was government policy and legislation to "assimilate" and similar policies and schools were developed in the US before the Canadian ones I believe...They were called "Indian Training Schools" I believe....

yes, Im wracking my brain to remember where or what I read about these schools before - but I know its heartbreaking - is there a film about this, a story film rather than a doc does anybody know? dunno

yes, I think the industrail revolution is where we all started to feel the pinch of oppression - but we nevr had it so bad as all of you of course - im ashamed to be English sometimes - actually, my family are irish from way back then and the did suffer at the hands of the british in the form of the potato famine which was nasty - the Scotts had the land clearance acts too so quite a lot of people were actually victimised by the mind set of the day - sadly................

I would never blame a nation for what happened in Wales as our English counterparts suffered the same fate. It was a few greedy people not an Nation

Exactly...It was the governments of the day...NOT the people...BUT there are still things which the governments of today refuse to address so that almost makes them a part of the problem...conversing conversing

From the first day the white men and women set ashore here in North America....there were men of both races (white and red) that tried to
find way to keep things like the trail of tears from occurring. Davie Crockette is one example. Davie Crockette also led an armed militia into Iroquis terrority to recover hostaged settlers from his Kentucky settlement.

Be fair here. Try to get history right. There were Indian bands and tribes that were just as cruel, violent and hostile as those troopers that guarded the Cherokees during the Trail of Tears. Does that mean
all Indians were that way? No. As I have already said there men and women on both sides of this that had the welfare of both sides at heart and mind. But there some groups, no white man wanted to run into.

My grandfather was a stage coach guard driver for a time. During the
late 1880s in California, home of a Indian tribe that went to war at the time. Riding stage was a dangerous occupation then and there if you
get my drift here.

I don't make heros of men like the troopers of the Calvary that took
the Cherokees to their reservation. Nor do I make heros of Indians that find near helpless settlers and kidnap and torture them as well.

It is easy to sit here today and look back at one side or the other....and point fingers and make accusations of the events then.
The simple fact that both side were extreme scared of the other
and had great hate for the other. That was enough to bring horrible events to both to occur. What if Custer would have been able to ride into the camp of 10000 Indians, placed his hand in the air and said let us talk and find a peaceful resolution to this and not spill blood.

Would the Indians honored a truce for talks? I don't think so. The Plain Indains had gathered for a war. They had sent parties out seeking the settlers and gold miners coming into the area. Had already in the year attacked several. They wanted a fight just as bad as the Calvary did. Custer was a fool.....but even fools should not die the way he and his men did that day.

Im sorry, but i do feel embarrased at times to be from England as that is where the laws were made at the time. I apologise - humbly - even though I recognise that we, the people have no choice in the matter.

Whose blaming anyone...I think I was just recounting one period in history...I'm sure there were Natives just as cruel....BUT I'm also sure they didn't oppress an entire race in the name of greed!!!!!!!

There were rich Welsh men equally to blame hun And your neck of the wood suffered with poverty like the south Wales valleys. I do feel sad about the language though its making acome back but it should be taught as compulsory in primary schools
