what is a good thread ?

Any that has more than one possible correct response. where ideas are shared and not judged, an open exchange between many not just one or two individuals.

Galactic_bodhi: Quality is something that is subjective. Value is a personal quantification. I like anything that provokes me to think, to muse, to wonder, to place me in a position of not knowing, because that position is simply intolerable to me, and thus will motivate me to expand my horizons.

Alot can be said for jokey, homey, getting-to-know-you threads, but I've reached a point on this site where I know who I want to know, and thus leave these threads for people who still haven't found their purpose here. My purpose is to expand my horizons, and if others come along for the ride, well, that is merely a biproduct of my selfish need to grow.

Hey Dor. Good to see you

I still believe in learning one new thing a day if possible.thumbs up

Always good to see you TET! How is the writing?

Ambrose2007: I like threads that either have some form of intellectual substance, provide interesting information that provokes discussion (JB's recent account of her tryst with Mr. McBoatman, for example), or involve humorous riffs. I think the best threads are the ones that combine all three. Not a fan of word association or person above threads or other related whimsical threads, unless there's something clever circulating in them.

Hi Ambose! Clever is nice!

Hmm ... it seems it is exactly what we need to learn on the Forums. The skill to listen is priceless ... the skill to accept a right answer or an opinion ( when it is not your own) is worth a life time experience.

Ulimaroa: Sometimes ... when a title grabs me,
or the last couple of posts intrigue me.
or the last poster is yummy
If its someone I feel close too,
I mean I have seen them around,
or its a story like Fishinggirls ,
its hard to resist...
reading
=> strain => on => the => eyes => but sometimes, if there are witty biting remarks, enjoyable...

But, alas, (too much information) very, very, very, often.

What gets to me in the "serious" threads NO use of the return button,
lumps of words with no breaks,
arguments based on ignorance (spreading misinformation)
No smileys.

I do not use a lot of smileys (I am given to understatement by disposition!)

I definitely prefer the text broken up a bit, easier to read, ndf misinformation is the true curse of thee internet age!

Nowadays if I google something I have to wade through uninformed blogs diseminating rumours and check everything several times...and still cannotralways be sure of my sources!

Thanks Uli.

lorraine: Threads like this one is a fav of mine.
Gives everyone a chance to say their bit.
I like a variety of threads depending on my mood.
Sometimes I post but if I come in and the thread is already
into 8 or more pages I don't bother. After reading through I see that
someone else has probably said what I was going to say.
If I do post I usually post my opinion and then leave it at that.
unless someone asks me about something I have said.
Least fav would be the say something to someone.

I know that feeling, or I post after reading just the OP, then read the thread and realise how unoriginal my thinking really is!rolling on the floor laughing

Fallingman: Mood determines which ones to get into. I like the Word Associations but really only when the words are interesting or the connections clever, I like the American political ones - if anyone listens to each other - though they are full of the most awful rumour and character assassination, I like the religious ones when they are pithy....which is rare, and I enjoy properly absurd ones but not mush or endless hello, hi, hello, exchanges. I don't believe that "the past" was much better - there are lots of good minds here now. Perhaps we just need ONE stimulating new idea from someone each day and the forum will feel good and vibrant!

I have lived long enough to have a 'past' and the only thing that was better is that I could run faster!
Things are different, and change is always unsettling,

It is also very tempting to believe that 'my' way of doing something is the right way...the ONLY right way, but that is not true. There has always been 'more than one way to skin a cat' cliches exist to express universal truths I think!conversing

Variety and spice. Yummy!wave

It is nearly eight here now so I need to get ready to leave. On Thursdays I host a 'home improvement' show with a local design firm so I need to go over my notes.
