prncss4someone: but see, you just don't know what could happen. A stranger at the door whose car broke down, or whatever weirdos say to get kids to trust them EVEN though they have been taught not to. It happens every day. There's no way on earth I'd allow her to stay alone in the house overnight. Just too many variables. It's good that she is mature, but think about it Dana, she might just boot the computer up on Saturday night and read my posts... you wouldn't want that now, would you????
It's wonderful that she is mature, but really honey, for this world, she is just a pup. Good luck whatever you decide.
I wouldn't worry about your posts as much as what I have in my yahoo archives this week.
Hugz_n_Kissez: If she is mature and has a friend over...plus alot of people around to keep an eye out if she needs something...I don't see a problem with it!!!!!!!!
Leave her your number and call...so you know everything is ok and I'm sure she will be fine!!!!!!!!! Happy Mother's Day....
Home alone? Heck my son moved out when he was 16, he is now 17 and still lives on his own. He thought he should be able to make his own rules and now he does I guess. I would trust my 12 y/o on his own through the day, he's pretty trust worthy. As for his older brother not a chance I would leave him in my house on his own, I don't care what age he is.
well i would be very concerned with what is legal thats always a good reason to give a child if we are not in the mood for the tug of war of a 'no' answer
overnight the house can catch fire tornado anything can happen a break in a neighbor w/ a need- next time they dont like you they report you
i wouldnt do it
in most states its 16 legal age i believe?
im mature-ive been known to panic and not know what to do at times
sometimes the answer is just no-because im the mom and im going to do my job-now you be the kid and you do your job.
i wouldnt feel good later (as the child) if my mom left me- even if i had asked. the parent needs to be the boss- kids and dogs feel more secure w/ boundaries.
there are plenty of ways for kids to learn and use skills of independence.

Thank you all for the good advise. I really appreciate it. I've decided that she will spend the night with Jayne. I don't mind her being here during the day - she'll spend that time with her friends and Jayne is always around and outside. Em spends a lot of time with her.
So, she can stay home during the day, but will spend the night with Jayne.
dcj22: What is the appropriate age, in your opinion, to allow a child to stay home alone? During the day? Overnight? Maturity plays a role, but do you think age matters?
They can be safely locked in a closet at any age! and with elderly folks.. they can be put in a closet also-- You just dont need to lock them in then because they can't remember how to open the door!

reminds me when my dad was in a wheelchair had to get a peg tube (stomach feeding tube) so i put a baby lock on the fridge and freezer
i came home from the store one day- he met me at the back door and he was MAD of course he had forgotten he wasnt sposed to eat by mouth anymore-but felt 14 again-skeered! busted!
he's gone now but that is one of my weird happy bittersweet memories of him-we lived together 3 yrs-only time ever in my life... the last years of his life and he passed 3 yrs ago

Thank God none of my kids have come out of the closet!
I leave my 14 year old son alone at night for around 4-5 hours about once a month. My parents live right down the hallway and there are cell phones to keep in touch. He knows the ground rules and I have had great success. I wouldn't stay away all night, but for a few hours, certainly.
