"A city magistrate has ruled that Oslo's so-called "cave man,"
who once lived in a pile of garbage near the city's university campus,
must agree to wash himself since he's now living in a publicly funded nursing home.
He objects, and vows to take his case to Norway's supreme court.

The "cave man's" case has been brewing in the courts for months, and was sent back to the magistrate's level because of some judicial errors.

He's still insisting that he can't be forced to wash, and will only do so if he so chooses. His lawyer called forced washings "an extremely serious assault on the private sphere."

The 54-year-old man is a former physics student who's lack of personal hygiene led to his expulsion from student housing back in the late 1970s. He then started living in a pile of garbage adjacent to the campus, and public authorities let him be.

Health problems led to his admission to the nursing home two years ago, but once there he caused a stink, quite literally. Staff insisted he follow the rules of the institution out of consideration for his fellow residents and infection control.

City officials were pleased with the magistrate's decision. The "cave man" was not, and he also has reported his forced washings to the police."
From Aftenposten

I've walked past him in the street, and he smells BAAAAAAD!!!!

Sounds to me like he needs more than a bath. Sounds like someone (perhaps a family member) should declare him mentally incompetent, for his own sake. That can't be healthy living in a pile of garbage.

In Florida, he would have been Baker Acted. There were times, we had to forcefully bathe patients in the facility where i worked! But it was a public health issue

This is an article about the same man, but from 18.01.08

'Cave man' causes trouble for nursing home

A 54-year-old Norwegian man who once lived in a cave and refuses to wash is now creating a health risk at an Oslo nursing home, claim its operators. A local court has ruled, however, that he can't be forced to keep himself clean.

A lawyer for the so-called "cave man" (long known as hulemannen in Oslo) told Norwegian Broadcasting (NRK) on Friday that his client was "relieved and very satisfied" by the court ruling in his favour.

"He has waited a long time, and can now finally decide over his own body," lawyer Nils Nordhus told NRK.

Foul smell
Nordhus' client studied physics at the University of Oslo when he was evicted from a student housing complex in the late 1970s. His lifestyle and complete disregard for personal hygiene has always made him smell extremely foul, and other people have a hard time being around him.

He moved into a cave near the tramway tracks running adjacent to the University of Oslo's campus at Blindern. He also spent several years living in a pile of garbage near the Blindern tram stop, and authorities pretty much let him be.

Now 54, and suffering from the effects of his chosen lifestyle, he needs medical care. He was admitted to a public nursing home in Oslo's St Hanshaugen district and staff there forced him to wash.

The 54-year-old adamantly objected to his forced washings and sued the city, which runs the nursing home. He won, with the court saying the city can't care for him against his will.

Nursing home officials maintain that he still poses a risk of infection for other residents and staff of the nursing home, and that sores on his limbs must be cleaned and treated.

Respect, up to a point
Sylvi Listhaug, the city official ultimately in charge of social services, said she respects nursing home residents' rights to make their own lifestyle decisions. "But there must be a limit when those decisions affect other people, like staff at the nursing home and other residents there," Listhaug said.

It remains unclear what will happen now. Nordhus is demanding that the city transfer him "to a more appropriate place," but he seemed at a loss to say where that might be.

Talk him into going to a terrorist camp in Middle east! Drop him from a plane.....then burn the plane. professor

If he is of a good mental state, offer help or let him be. Then handle the problem as being a public nusance.

Sad story. He should become a hog farmer. His smell will
not be a problem, unless someone comes to visit him.

My last 6 yrs working was in a nursing home,
We had a few that would refuse baths.. usually became an infection problem..
also.. no one wanted to sit anywhere near them in the dining room. game time or any other time.

By most states laws.. yes. they can refuse cares, meds and so on... but can not refuse anything that will adversely affect others.

and if mentally incompetent - they then can not refuse meds and cares.
But.. the home MUST have Dr Statement, stating that the person is mentally incompetent.
