cathy61: Luxury to me is....................
Coming home after a long day at work, running a hot bubble bath, lying in it relaxing with a glass of wine, a few cigarettes and a good book then snuggling into bed with freshly laundered bed linen and getting a sound sleep

- Having a roof over my head; well, not only a roof, but a lovely little house, with a wonderful little garden, in a nice part of town.

- Having food on the table; not just the basics, but also the extras - variety, fish and meat, desserts, wines...

- Having clothes on my back; not just a few pieces, but several items to choose from, several pairs of shoes, clothes for different seasons and moods.

When I think of all the people in the world who hardly even have the bare necessities, that is when I feel I live in luxury.

Read pretty much all the posts ... and what sprang to my mind is that many of us "luxuriate in" what are not always considered luxuries ... reason we luxuriate in them is the awareness that many beings in the world don't have those available to them ... so the "feeling of luxury" is attached to a state of mind rather than a something material ...

Some of the things that have been listed in this thread as luxuries, the welfare state provides for some people for free ... does that mean that those in gainfull employment are paying to keep those who don't work in luxury OR does it mean that in Europe "some things" are not considered luxuries but essentials?

One word of caution Nina, when you look at people who are worse off than you, you will never make progress. You always feel that because you are better than them, you should stop striving to be better.
Always look up, never look down. Your aim is the sky, or somewhere in between.

I agree that you should aim for the sky, Antcus, in order to make progress, and not stagnate. I also believe, however, that it is humbling to keep in mind that many people are less fortunate than yourself - and it makes you appreciate what you have. If I am better off than other people, that does not make me better than them, and it does not affect me always trying to better myself. It is good to count your blessings every so often.

i think it is a blessing to be able to give to the poor. it is a blessing to see people with nothing who welcome you and love that you have come to help them.

i don't think being better off than others has anything to do with anything. i am fortunate to be able to help others, some.

but there is no reason why everyone in the world could not have the luxury of not being hungry. i have heard we could easily feed the world's population many times over.

Well, Elley, your friend is a Medical Man .. so he was referring to the physical side of men which I agree is Simple - they dont mind bashing themselves with hammers, impaling their fingers on nails, struggling in arm wrestling competitions while blind drunk, playing slapping games with their mates, shooting at bottles and cans on a fence, yahooing around town in their cars at midnite, playing with toy trains, flying kites, etc ..... I`m talking about the Complicated Side of them..... How fussy they get over their food when someone else cooks it, being critical over silly things like Who Messed With Their Car, Whose turn it is to go buy the beer, Why they Have To Have A New Motor-Bike, They cant sew on a button, and when they have a partner they No Longer Able To Do Anything Fun Anymore...... and lots of other stupid stuff.....cheers jackolantern batting
