ok yesterday i was on line and then bang ....... a windows notification about me having 47 viruses all to do with trojan ,so the scan went on for ages and then i get the "in order to remove these harmful viruses you must subscribe to windows virus protection 2008"

BUT when i run a scan with my own firewall (norton) they tell me everythings ok ??? so the windows virus protecter downloaded and installed itself and now every 5 minutes it comes up saying 47 viruses found to fix this subscribe now !!!

obviously iv been wary about popping on line but keep thinking surely MY puters own protection scan would have seen this ?

not sure what to do yet but ill figure it out ,iv already done a system restore ,a back up ,a defrag ,iv ran umpteen scans with defender but still i get the same message ,
whats your take on it ? surely if there was a problem like so my own scan would have picked it up ???

thanks people wine

Sometimes the program uninstalls and leaves the shortcut icon behind.

Try to right click on that icon in your tray...click *properties* see if its just a short cut or a full program

Do you have any other antispy programs to run, cause that one is at least that or malware itself.
If it's not in control panel under add/remove program and its not in all programs and show an uninstall.
Then you could do what I do in that case Start, Run, Name of that program, then right click on each one and delete. Sometimes one file may not go away right away so go to the next then come back to it, that usually works.
Be sure not to delete anything that is not that program. But anything that has that program name and it's prefetch file , will make it quit coming up. wine

I agree....what you have now is a true malaware program, and you will need a good anti-spyware program to remove it, and unfortunately that will be the only way, because it is going to be hidden and will not show up under add/remove programs, and it is also now hidden inside the registry

see thats what i thought at first BUT when in said folder the program is still there ,iv now "uninstalled" it 6 times ,done a defrag ,cleared up disk space ,went back to the 8th of this month ,but its still there laugh

why is there not a emoticon for ripping hair out laugh

just a moment ago i went to installed programs ,its not there ? yet it installed itself yesterday so surely it should be somewhere ? is it possible for a program to be a ghost ? iv checked the root of where it comes from . it has an install and uninstall but that doesnt work as iv already said .

done this all last night ,i do have a few firewalls and the like and i know for a definite my protection is up to date as well as my spyware (iv already found 3 tracking cookies but nothing else)

so is it possible to have a ghost program ? until today i wouldnt have thought so BUT in control panel there is no said program and not even a file with the same amount of kb,s ,yet it has its on folder ,and iv uninstalled it ,deleted it ,stopped it running but its still there .

Which anti-spyware program are you using currently? In my experience Ad-aware is very good at finding malaware programs

Not any single antispyware program finds them all, there are a couple of really good free online scans that can get them, maybe someone here can tell you ones they have tried.
You should have several antispy programs installed to catch and to clean them out. Malware is very good at hiding and if you couldn't find them in the start, run , name of program, and deleting each one.
Then your only choice is a good online scan or get a antiwalware program installed. What you have maybe a rootkit type of malware, some of the worst there is.

if you have the original dislk that comes with the computer and the rest of the software you have inestalled (or the activation key if you got them on line) you can get ride of all the malicious software you got including that pop up
it might not be a virus, that is the reazon your antivurus do not pick it

usually it means about one day having software runing in your computer, you will not be able to use the computer during that time

if you are interested in going this way, let me know and i will give you all the details on how to deal with it and get ride of the problems

with a pc sweep she will be loosing all her documents pictures, music, ........

frist she will have to save all those without saveing the files that have the problesms

later she will have to have back in the copmputer the files she backed up, but making sure that no malicious software will come back

some of then can still be in the back up, as thgey also make the back up to back themselves

I used to use Nortons with no complaints until it found a virus one of it's removal tools couldn't find.

I then went to and had my system scanned. They found the virus and removed it, but it was with a different name than what Norton said it was. I no longer use Nortons.

Trend Micro™ HouseCall is an application for checking whether your computer has been infected by viruses, spyware, or other malware.

One good thing about Trend Micro, it's free.

One thing I didn't see addressed by others. Some malware will add to the registry and no matter how much you try to remove the trojan, the registry value will allow the trojan to reinstall itself. You will have to go into regedit to remove the correct values.

This is a really good scan , I have used it , takes awhile to run but it is thorough!!thumbs up applause I think another was called Bit defender online scan. Any of these can help you keep from having to reformat and reinstall everything.thumbs up
