rusty_knight: ......... at present I am wavering on the fence - and by pure geographical definition only a very small part of Turkey is in Europe.

It is important that basic values are shared by the members of the union and that the members respect each other. Like in any association, really.

Turkey still is discussing within their country if they really are interested.

More interesting is what is going on in Italy right now. What is going on, and is this an acceptable behaviour for a union member? I’d stay tuned for more interesting turns in that country.

I'm a bit like Gangel - don't favour, don't oppose....

What are the arguements for and against, anyway?

Do they go something like:

For - population of Europe is plummeting and could use a boost from the Middle East. After all, who will be paying for our pensions in 20 years time??

Against - on-going human rights violations, Kurds, etc....?

I want to visit to Constantinople, actually..... used to pop over to Halicarnasus when we still had the house on Kos..... best goddam food in the world.....

I think I might understand what you are talking about - how Italy is treating some fellow EU citizens that happen to be of Romany stock; I saw a shocking photograph in the paper yesterday of two little gypsy girls lying on a beach covered by towels. People were happily chatting on beachtowels enjoying the sunshine sitting on the beach within yards/metres of these two little girls.

So what?

The two little girls (aged 11 and 12 I think) had just been dragged from the sea - DEAD!

They had been sent to the beach by their parents to beg, then decided to dash into the sea, got 'walloped' by a large wave and drowned......

Their corpses lay ignored on the beach for an hour as if they weren't there until their bodies were removed.

Actually, I am more concerned by the full immunity decision for the government during the sitting period. Since some high up people there are facing corruption charges. What signals does that send to common folks?

The nationalist thing going on there seems to be a common wind in many parts of Europe now, and is generally disturbing for me, lacking such feelings. Same old, same old, blame the foreigners for the bad economy.

rusty_knight: We can then accept Turkey and its nice neigbours of Iran, Iraq and Syria into the Union too!

There is a difference. Turkey has been working close to the European Union and what was before this since at least 45 years. They ARE part of Europe, if this would have any importance. They HAVE agreements with EC.

But there are many issues that seem hard to overcome for Turkey, and naming those other nations: they will have an even worse nightmare adjusting to current “minimum” rules and standards.

I honestly see a further growth of the trade union EU as problematic in economical terms, where we take room, we take from someone else.

Many non-European countries have agreeements with the EU (nolonger the EC, by the way).

Turkey is a special case and applied to join at the same time as Greece -Greece itself had been a rather non-democratic poor country which many 'core' European countries regretted for many years to have allowed into the 'Common Market'.

However, you cannot argue that Turkey is actually in Europe - only a tiny percentage of Turkey is geographically in Europe....... that's why the Bospheros (I probably didn't spell it correctly) is known to divide Europe from Asia - and even Istanbul is geographically half in Europe and half in Asia.

I'm not saying that Turkey shouldn't join the EU - what I AM saying is that the EU really needs to redefine what it is and what it wants to acheive on the world stage for the intergration of Turkey to be both acceptable and successful...............

Hi Conrad,

Who do you mean by 'they'?

Do you mean the Turks?

I know that a few years back over 70% of Turks wanted to join the EU, now I believe it is slightly under 50%........ most Turks seem to be tired of not knowing whether they'll be accepted or not.

They also would like to know, if the answer is positive, when they'll be accepted.

Most Turks just want to know what's going to happen, but if it's going to be drawn out indefinitely then many would prefer to make other plans for their future.

And that they will...certainly. Except that theywill be drawn into a civil war regarding what direction to take.

Less than a hundred years ao ther were three continental empires - the Tsars; the Ottomans and the Austrohungarians. None exist today. But prejudices exist like clams to the bottom of a ship.

There was a leadership of the EU 20 years ago; today it is horse-piss. If Turkey isnt coming into the EU then what we will have is mayhem....just the thing that Americans want EU to be in while they pick up lucrative unilateral contacts in EASTERN EUROPE.

The EU has some bad leaders in dominant positions - Merkel and Sarkosy; quite a combination. I dont know what Merkel does but Sarkosy is so eager to get into bed with the Americans..besides you know what.

Half the eu nations participated in American renditions and now they talk of human rights to Turkey! Britain is such a runny lacky of the USA that they dare have a voice in this debate.

Turkey is a great nation. One of the greatest of the 20th century. It is drawn between the secularism of the EU and the undercurrents of radical Islam. Read about Turkey and you will understand what makes it a great nation. From obscuratism to secularlism; from backwarkwardness to modernisation. Take the time. It will pay off. Like Peter the Great of Russia, Kemal Attaturk took his country to newer times.

Scorn is easy. Knowledge is difficult.
