I've marched for and participated in jog-a-thons for things like Cystic Fibrosis, AIDS, etc... Never demonstrated because more often than not I'm in someone elses country.
There was a period in the not so distant future when political tension hit a high on these islands.
Some idiot wanted to show the other side how macho he could be, and let loose some shots at the facade of a political club of the opposite faction.
One bullet went haywire, and hit a young man and killed him.
The following day there was a silent march organised in Valletta, our capital. Thousands of people attended, mostly younger ones. The city went quite that day. Nobody so much as wishpered. Most, like myself, were crying. It ended infront of parliament with the National Anthem being sung.
And yes it worked. In the followign days both leaders of the main political parties went public togethere on all forms of media, and changes where immediately put in place to diffuse the entire situation. Which they thankfully did.
And still proud that I was one of those that helped to make it so.
jimbhoy: What are YOU demonstrating against GILLY?????The mind ponders
I marched through Manchester one day with thousands of others, marches were going on all round the world that same day too - we were chanting 1 - 2 - 3 - 4 WE DONT WANT YOUR BLOODY WAR........ it didnt make the least bit of difference sadly.........
Hiya Jim
Hiya Gilly too if you havent gone out, whats your march about?
I led a mini protest once of about 40 people...the Chief on the reserve was trying to take over the Royal Chapel given to us by the Queen...for his own split-off religious group...so three of them..2 being members of this split off group voted to let this group use it...which was a clear conflict of interest....It's an Anglican church which has been in our community since the 1800 I think....and because this splt-off Anglican group was going to be using it...the Bishop was going to deconsecrate it...and it would no longer be a church!!!!!
The way this group did it was not even to ask...but just say they would pay half the utilities and just barged right in...I am not religious...however what they did was wrong and there were many people about to lose the only church they attended for years and who had loved ones buried there!!!!!!!!!
Needless to say..we marched into the Council Chambers and demanded they recind the motion before they date of deconsecration...with the media present ect....and we didn't leave until they did....They got the funniest pic of the day of me both in the paper and on t.v. of me telling the Chief to either rescind the motion or sign a resignation form I had drafted up...I think we slammed it back and forth about 4 or 5 times...and it was quite funny....Me telling him he was going to sign and him slamming it back saying NOOOO!!!!!

Anyway..those were my rebel days!!!!!!!!!
Oh it was a good one and we were mighty proud of ourselves....that was only about 4 years ago I think...so those days aren't all that long past!!!!!!!!!!!
We had meetings and sent out information to the community and had been to council meetings trying to get them to change it...so this was about a 5 month process and each time we turned up the heat a bit and escalated the pressure a bit more...so the final culmination was the protest...which turned out awesome...we all made up signs etc...Mine was rescind or resign of course!!!!!!!!
1-2-3-4 I was in that bloody war............... and a lot of people who demonstrated took thier frustration out on the troops
I did a good job, got hurt and came home... I have no regrets about going... lost a few men I knew in the process, so everyone has the right to protest but if that right is taken away would you like it
The protesters against a war would be the first to send soldiers in if there is something against protesters protesting...etc
Well in Iraq and Afghanistan they didn't have your rights of protesting
Everyone should have a turn at being a soldier... maybe the world will realise that the last thing A SOLDIER WANTS IS A WAR OF ANY KIND...

I also demonstrated towards animal rights at the circus and another time towards the benefits of our freedom of liberisation of private schools and hospitals.
