Texas school district to let teachers carry guns....

Fri Aug 15, 2008 3:41pm EDT

HOUSTON (Reuters) - A Texas school district will let teachers bring guns to class this fall, the district's superintendent said on Friday, in what experts said appeared to be a first in the United States.

The board of the small rural Harrold Independent School District unanimously approved the plan and parents have not objected, said the district's superintendent, David Thweatt.

School experts backed Thweatt's claim that Harrold, a system of about 110 students 150 miles northwest of Fort Worth, may be the first to let teachers bring guns to the classroom.

Thweatt said it is a matter of safety.

"We have a lock-down situation, we have cameras, but the question we had to answer is, 'What if somebody gets in? What are we going to do?" he said. "It's just common sense."

Teachers who wish to bring guns will have to be certified to carry a concealed handgun in Texas and get crisis training and permission from school officials, he said.

Recent school shootings in the United States have prompted some calls for school officials to allow students and teachers to carry legally concealed weapons into classrooms.

The U.S. Congress once barred guns at schools nationwide, but the U.S. Supreme Court struck the law down, although state and local communities could adopt their own laws. Texas bars guns at schools without the school's permission.

Someday there's going to be war between California and Texas,

their differences can not suffer their proximity indefinately.

I love California, but my money's on Texas...

I don't own a gun. I can count on one hand the number of times that I've operated a gun (and this was under trained supervision only). I don't think that it would be the end of the world if there were a few armed individuals on campus who were actually on our side and could be of assistance in a dangerous situation. If a teacher were to be allowed to carry a weapon on campus, he or she would need rigorous screening, training and licensure to do so, just like police officers. (By the way, they carry guns all day long, and no one worries about their weapons "falling into the wrong hands", because they are strictly required to follow proper procedure with them.)

I would definitely be in favor of teachers being trained in self-defense and in the use of pepper spray (and being allowed to carry it).

Don't get me wrong - I don't want to see our schools becoming battlegrounds, and I sure as heck don't want to be a security guard. It stinks that the issue of school shootings even exists. But the teachers and the students really are sitting ducks; everyone knows that nobody is allowed to carry weapons on campus (even most security guards aren't usually armed with anything more potent than a walkie-talkie). It's not about being "ready to fight back" (implying vengeance). It's about being able to protect the children entrusted to their care. When our schools have a lockdown, and frightened students are involved you bet I'd want our teachers to carry. Even a mother at home has a frying pan or kitchen knife with which to defend herself and her children against intruders.

I agree that it is sad that the issue of violence and guns in school even has to be an issue but I have to agree that teachers should have the option to carry a licensed weapon. A careful screening process definitely should be conducted and proper training should definitely be pursued, but if a teacher desires that kind of protection for their students, it should be allowed. We have to be careful we don't allow our rights as Americans to be subdued (i.e. our right to bear arms).

While I agree with safety....I don't know that I would want kids attending a school where the teachers are that paranoid that they have to carry guns....What if some innocent student gets shot because he reached in his pocket or something????? You see police do it all the time...so it's not like it can't happen!!!!

professor roll eyes uh oh dunno

They should have security posted then if things are that bad....BUT I wouldn't trust what could be some teachers itchy trigger finger!!!!!!!!!!

The Columbine High School massacre occurred on Tuesday, April 20, 1999, at Columbine High School in Columbine in unincorporated Jefferson County, Colorado, near Denver and Littleton. Two students, Eric Harris and Dylan Klebold, embarked on a shooting rampage, killing 12 students and a teacher, as well as wounding 23 others, before committing suicide. It is the fourth-deadliest school killing in United States history, after the 1927 Bath School disaster, 2007 Virginia Tech massacre and the 1966 University of Texas massacre, and is the deadliest high school shooting.

The massacre provoked debate regarding gun control laws, the availability of firearms in the United States, and gun violence involving youths. Much discussion also centered on the nature of high school cliques, subcultures and bullying, as well as the role of violent movies and video games in American society. The shooting also resulted in an increased emphasis on school security, and a moral panic aimed at goth culture, social pariahs, the gun culture, the use of pharmaceutical anti-depressants by teenagers, violent films and music, teenage internet use, and violent video games.

These are accidents waiting to happen, the sad part is there is not a guarantee that this will not happen again, had these teachers had the means (guns) to put a stop to them then they may have been able to save some of the innocents in this horror.

evening joel. you probably deserved it too, laugh but on a serious note this has been long comming and way over due as far as I am concerned, society breeds these people, economics play a big part in their upbringing as there is nobody at home in most cases to mentor so this is our result, sad but true. And a fact.

Would it not be better to install metal detectors such as in airports to stop anyone entering with any sort of weapon, guns or knives?

It's something being tried in some places in the UK

Texas is far from home, but I recon if they are afraid of the guns, they took care to go crazy on any students. Now they can just duel instead.

I respect your threads but in this case you seem to have summed it up without much thought to the reality of what is happening, and I don't mean any offense by this, there would be no duel I assure you as the ones (teachers) being trained adults would know exactly how to end the problem. No shoot out at the ok corral here, just an end to evil doings against law abiding citizens.

When my oldest son was in middle school some gang members carrying guns and knives broke into his Science class and starting beating up on the teacher and some of the students.

My son said there was nothing him and his classmates could do but sit in their seats and watch their teacher & some of his classmates get beat up. One of the students in the classroom was able to escape out one of the other doors of the classroom luckly without being seen and ran for help. By the time help arrived the teacher & acouple of the students were dead & laying in a pool of blood.

Maybe if that particular teacher would've been allowed back then to carry a gun on campus maybe he could've saved his own life plus his students. I really don't know.

All I know is my son & his classmates were tramatized for along time and scared to attend school for several days after that happened.

Some of his classmates had to attend couseling.

My offer was not serious, but the subject is so severe I do not really want to dig to deep into it.

We are talking automatic gun fire to hand guns here.

I am a trained soldier. I would not want to hold the hand gun.

irishlass45: Get real lady, did you not read about the murders above? and these are just a few of the realities, sad but true, until it happens in your neck of the woods (God forbid) I would not expect you to understand it, wish we could all live in dreamland of things like this not happening. America is a mass multicultural place, we have nuts from all over the world, and I hate to say this but even from Spain.

Very real lady here. I'm a teacher and have taught all over the world, latterly in Russia where I am at the moment.

I wouldn't want to touch a gun let alone carry one in amongst my homework papers.

Dreamland is when you think that a teacher with a gun can stop the violence in schools.
